m77 tang safety question

I have the opportunity to buy a used M77 in .25-06 but I need a couple questions answered first.  I checked Ruger's website and the gun was built in 1981

I heard people mention problems with barrels in the older Rugers.  Should this be something I need to worry about in this gun?

Also, I read something about a trigger overtavel adjustment set screw needing replacing.  Does anyone know which years are effected?

i have a m77 tang safety .25-06 from 1981 also. i have had no problems of any kind with it. it is one of the most accurate bolt guns i own. with my handloads it will shoot sub 1/2 inch all day long. no factory load i ever shot went over 1.25 inches. your gun may or may not have the overtravel screw already replaced. you can always contact ruger and find out if they have records of it being done or you can have it replaced. if i were you id pick it up and never look back.

I have 5 and looking for more of them.  A model 77 .243 RSI, 3 77's RS in .270 Win, 30-06, and .458 Win, and model 77 R in .280 Rem.  All shoot good, function flawlessly, and couldn't be more pleased with any of them.

I walked into a shop today and there was a tang safety 30/06 right up front. The price was a bit high but I may pick it up anyway. I love my 243 and 30/06 is being converted to a 6mm/06 as we speak.  On second thought, I should have picked it up the first time.

I have an M77 in 7mm that has shot many elk, mule & whitetail deer plus an antelope. My father gave me this early model gun. A couple of years ago, I had the itch to buy a new rifle but just couldn't find one that made sense to replace the M77 and its history. I ended up restocking it with a Bell & Carlson camo thumbhole stock and adding a timminey trigger. A friend loads custom ammo for me so we have had the rifle shooting sub moa even before my custom job. This gun gets looks when its pulled from the case and is a pleasure to shoot.
My son has an M77 in 270 that we bought used for his first gun. It had a muzzel brake on it and we had a local gun smith smooth the trigger. I floated the barrel and it is a sweet shooter also.

I have an older (Tang Safety) M-77 I bought in 1983, in .338 Win Mag.  I also have an M-77 MK-II in .338 Win Mag.  The older gun shoots better and will handle heavier (Hotter) loads than the new one, before showing pressure signs.  As for the screw replacement, Ruger mailed me a replacement screw for mine, shortly after I bought it.

I had a tang safety 77 in 25-06. It shot Winchester 120 gr PEP factory ammo into 5 shot groups smaller than a quarter at 100 yards. It did not have the prettiest stock and I got it for $225. Unfortunately it was among 12 guns I had stolen some years back. There were more expensive guns in the group, but losing that one hurt more than any of them.
