vehicle cord to power Garmin Venture HC
« on: February 10, 2008, 01:23:59 PM »
Does anyone know if there is a power cord for this gps unit I can use in the cigarette lighter in the truck? Garmin lists one it looks like a mini USB adaptor, is it a standard item I can get anywhere or a special item from Garmin only?

Thanks,
Joe

How I would do it

I check for the item I want at  http://cgi.ebay.com/Garmin-eTrex-Legend-Vista-HCX-Venture-Summit-HC-Cable_W0QQitemZ170192924807QQihZ007QQcategoryZ58045QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Gilsson manufactures this product and I have had very good results using their products with my Garmin Gps units.  Normally I find the unit price at the GPs Geek sight on e-bay, get the price and call them at: Toll-Free   866-445-7766

I refer to the GPS Geek item on e-bay so I get the price.  I pay by credit card, rather do it over the phone then over the net.

Normally I receive the item in the mail in a day or two depending on when I ordered it.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1148  This is Garmin’s store and you pay more.

Confirm you are ordering the correct adapter.

If your Venture HC uses a mini-USB for its power, any of those should work. I bought a Belkin cigarette lighter adapter from Walmart for my wife's cellphone (which uses the mini-USB).  It works fine in her Garmin Nuvi 360, as well.  Plus, it has a coiled cord, which is a lot more convenient than a straight cord for keeping it tucked out of the way.

I think I only paid $9.99 at Walmart.

Radio Shack has one with multiple adapter tips for different types of applications, gps, cell phone, palm, etc. but the guy wanted to know what the power requirements are so I don't pick a cord the fries the gps unit? do I have to be concerned about that in any cord that I pick?

I'm not sure why you're fooling around with Radio Shack.  I'm not aware of any Rat Shak cable that would have a USB adapter tip.  Even if they make one, you run the risk of plugging the tip in backwards, thus reversing polarity and trashing your GPS.  Plus, you'll spend $15-20 on the plug & adapters.

Just get a generic USB cell phone adapter at Walmart, Target, Rat Shak, etc. Power requirements for the GPS are minimal, probably less than 100 ma, certainly less than any cellphone's requirements.  You shouldn't have to spend more than $10.  Otherwise, just buy a Garmin adapter.

I got the Walmart generic power cord for the car and it works fine! Last week we were in FLA and it was the first vacation since I bought this unit last Christmas. My wife and I both got used to most of the capabilities and with the Mapsource mapping data it worked fine for us. We put in various favorite restaurants and watering holes along the way too!  I will be using it this year during turkey season pinpointing those strut zones and roosting areas too.

Excellent!  Glad to hear it worked out.

I've taken to carrying my handheld Garmin anytime I'm on a trip.  I use the "Points of Interest" feature much more than I ever expected.
