Which barrel???
« on: July 05, 2003, 11:59:49 AM »
I am considering buying either a 12" 480 Ruger or a 15" 308.  The main purpose would be for hunting deer, bear, elk and MAYBE someday caribou.  I would limit myself on any of the game listed to about 125-150 yards.  What are your thoughts?

:D

Hello there:

I have never shot the 480 Ruger, I'm sure its a great one. I do have and shoot the 15" Encore in 308. I have shot heavy recoiling handguns for years, and it suprised me the kick on this one. However, I mastered it. I backed down to 125 and 130 grain bullets, and worked up to the 150+ ones. I can tell you this: THAT THIS ONE IS ASTONSHING ACCURATE. If you do your part, you will love this one. I use whatever brass I have, mostly mixed military. My cousin down the road has the 30-06 in a 15" Encore, and we both know my 308 kicks harder. He even said JD Jones said the same thing. But, back to business, just load it about 5-8 grains below max, or start out like 30-30 Win loads in it. Its a great one in the Encore. I am one happy camper with mine. Now, I can shoot the full blown military stuff in it, just don't do it too regular. Maybe age is catching up with me, I used to love all that. The more it bellowed and kicked, the better it was. Now, I just experiment, and do accuracy stuff, that keeps me happy.

Best to you,

Casper

I have a 10" Encore .480 Ruger and love it!! I would use it for all the game you listed at those ranges. But,I do think you would be better off with a .308Win because, you would have more range if need be.

i'm like pj, the 480 ruger would be great, but about the only limit the .308 would have, would be your own shooting ability. the 480 would limit your range some.
put a good scope on a .308 and have a ball! i shoot the 7-08 myself and like it very well.
brass, bullets, factory ammo is also more plentiful for .308.
now, i'm not saying the 480 is not good, just that my own personal preference would be a .308 first. now don't think that just one barrel is gonna do. when contenderitis, and encorosis sets in, you're in trouble. you can then add the 480 ruger to ease the pain. :)  then, when the pain starts to come back again, a .223 would make a nice, well rounded three barrel set.
