Stevens 200 .223 to 22-250 rechamber?
« on: February 10, 2008, 06:49:35 PM »
I have a Stevens 200 in .223 waiting for me at my dads house. The BBL is 24" with a 1/9 twist. I was thinking that rechambering it to 22-250 with that twist would be awesome using the 70-75 grain match bullets. I would like to do this my self as a first time project and don't want to get in over my head as I have never done any real gunsmithing.

I know I need a new bolt head and extractor and such. What I was wondering will the chamber reamer for 22-250 clean out the .223 chamber and allow me to head space with out cutting length off the bbl? I was looking at cartage dimensions and the 22-250 is larger if I go real slow by hand with the reamer it looks like I may just get away with it but it would be a tight chamber (I know like a tight chamber is a bad thing ;))

Any and all tips and comment's are greatly appreciated
Thanks

Rechambering a .223 Remington to .22-250 is simply NOT a job to do by hand.  It's much too tedious to try and remove that much material, and you are just asking for a ruined chamber, reamer, or both.

You need a lathe with the proper accessories and technique to do it right.  For one thing, the pilot of the .22-250 reamer is not long enough to enter the barrel past the .223 chamber and provide guidance.  You will have to drill out the old chamber to reduce the amount of chamber to ream out.  Headspace gages are also essential.

If you have never done this before, or don't have a machinist's background, it's almost certain that paying a qualified gunsmith to do it is a better alternative.

What John said. ABOUT anyone, can change the barrel on the Savage action and get it right if they have the tools and the go and no-go gages, but cutting a chamber, and getting it right, is not for the unskilled.

Thanks for the input. Guess I will have to save my cash and take it to a smith and get it done right.

That would be a lot of money to put into a $300 rifle.  Why don't you either get a new one or look around for a used Remington in .22-250 and either sell yours or trade it in?  I think that you will be farther ahead.

Your idea is excellent if you have a smith do the work. My smith just completed a similar project for me. I bought a Stevens 200 in 25/06 and had my smith rechamber to 257 Roberts. In this conversion we lost just under 3/4". You should not lose any barrel length. However let me echo the above posters; have a smith do the work. you will not be sorry. After break-in my roberts is shooting .4 to .6 groups regularly. GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! GETTIN' OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES!!!
