So what does everyone do this time of year?
« on: February 12, 2008, 08:16:21 AM »
def. of "This time of year" = When it's cold out and there is really no good hunting to be had.

I have been meaning to get out to the shooting range but it's been so gosh darn cold that the motivation to do so just is not present.  Seems to me like there really is not too much to do recreational wise besides snowmobiling.

What are you guys and gals up to?  Am I the only one looking forward to spring?   :D

Indoor archery for the wife and me (kids too) we do a lot of target shooting and this is a fun way to get out of the house in the winter.

Coyote hunting and snowmobiling. I bought a new rifle today, and now I need to get dies, bullets, and brass to start load development for when it warms up a bit and can go to the range. Actually, today would have been a pretty decent day at the range.

Loaded up some .223. Used to be a Dolmar chain saw dealer, and rounded up all my parts that were left over from getting out of the business and traded them for a couple of used Dolmar/Sachs Dolmar chain saws. They match the ones I kept after going out of the business. I heat with wood and the parts that were remaining are for the saws that I traded for with another dealer.

Am working on cutting the barrel of an older H&R Topper in 30-30 Win. cailber. The barrel is now 22" and the newer version will be around the 17" mark. This will make the rifle overall length around 33" I want to use this for shooting out of a ground blind. It should help  alleviate the maneuverings one has to do to shoot out of the ground blinds window.

SHOVEL SNOW!   Well I plow it with my Kubota, I also burned garbage today. Last night my son shot the skunk that got in the trap a few days ago with his Rossi ultra light .410. ;D I go to work once in a while too. It is supposed to warm up to 30 in a few days and just maybe try o get a rabbit. When the snow melts in a few weeks/ months I go for sheds in Price co. Wis. and southern Wis. Not much else.

Good one. I am still hoping April brings luck with the Turkeys this year. Can't wait to get out hunting again.

Most of the winter shot off the back deck, have a 50 yd range right outside the patio door.
Tapped the maples today, nothing flowed. This time last year on Friday nite  I waited until after dark to collect sap and told the wife that she shouldn't have much to do while I was in the cities for the gun show at the State Fair Grounds. She was not happy when I got home she had run out of storage for sap, everything was running over, she was boiling sap like crazy.

That sounds like a ton of fun. How long have you been doing that? What is process for making maple syrup, anyway? Do you sell it or just make enough for the family? Much better than that high fructose corn syrup crap that has plagued the isles of supermarkets for years.  :P

Tapping trees isn't real high tech. I drill a hole in the tree about 2" deep and insert a tap connected by a hose to a milk jug.
I collect the sap daily or more often if the jugs fill up. When I have about 20 gallons of sap I start boiling. I use a turkey cooker burner on the back deck. Trying to do this in the Kitchen is suicidal. It takes 40 gal of sap to make 1 gal of syrup. so you will have 39 gal of water and sugar boiled off into the house. It's a sticky mess! When you have things boiled down to the right consistency. I put it up in pint jars. I only tap 10 trees so I will only end up with a little better than a Gallon of syrup. It's enough for the family. However 1/3 of the family lives in Seattle, and 1/3 lives in Spokane so postage gets seep. They can't wait untill Mom and Dad can haul it.
