Poison Ivy
« on: February 13, 2008, 09:38:57 AM »
Anybody get poison ivy during the winter? I had my beagle out last Friday for our last hunt of the season. Had a few rabbits out and got one. Sunday morning I had what looks like poison ivy around my ring finger. A few days later all the fingers on my left hand have it. So, is it poison ivy or something else?

You can get PI during the winter.  The vines continue to be poisonous.

Yeah....if you come in contact with a PI vine that's wrapped itself around a tree and you leaned against it....maybe your ring kind of cut into the vine a bit and a few chunks got under your ring....you will get it. A buddy of mine was splitting wood one year with a hydraulic splitter and got it from the logs.

Climbed a tree next to the Susquehanna river in very early spring, absolutely nothing green around.  I remember the brown vine wrapped around the tree but thought nothing of it. I got poison ivy so bad they had to put me on steroids.

The oil in the vines will certainly be poisonous all through the winter.  I've heard it can remain active for years, but I don't care to find out first hand.
