What barrel to get?????

Well, my little boy decided to sell his Topper in order to fund his "big boy" rifle(Rem. 700 in 308).  I do have an extra receiver DOB was 1996 so I'll have to stay with to lower pressure rounds.  Which would you guys suggest?  This will be my other little boy's hunting rifle.  He's 7 now and weighs about 68lbs and tough as nails.  I have a youth stock and an extra forend, as well as a hammer spur.  Thanks for all input.  Later.

no doubt about it, get your 7 year old a .357 Mag barrel and someday have it reamed out to .357 Max, until then the barrel will be fine for practice with .38 Specials and a fine deer gun with properly loaded .357 Mags or, if you feel the need, load it with stoutly loaded .360 Dan Wesson loads. The chance is great they will fit the factory .357 Mag barrel just fine as it is, my 2 .357 Mag barrels took .360 DW's just fine as they came from the factory. I have heard of some that did not but most have. If your does not no big loss, a properly loaded .357 Mag in a rifle is a fine deer gun with the .357 Max rivaling the ballistics of the venerable .35 Remington. My second choice, and a fine deer gun for him although not quite as versatile would be the fine old 30-30, but you knew that....<><....:)

Agreed 357 & max it. Cheap to shoot, Great FUN gun Great deer gun

as the others said, you cant go wrong with a .357 max or a .30-30!!

My 11 year old daughter has been deer hunting the past 3 years with a 223. She does so well with it that I bought my 7 year old son one to hunt with last year. Recoil is very mild and a Winchester silver tip bullet is more than enough for a deer with a well placed shot. Also the ammo is pretty cheap. I keep away from the mil. surplus but you can pick up the remington fmj shells for a fair price for plinking and target practice. The 223 also makes a great varmint rifle.

I agree with MSP Ret. Go with the 3 Fifty 7. You can ream it out to the .357 Max later as he grows. Cheap to practice with in the .38's for now, then go to the larger calibers. After doing some watching and reading, I think my next barrel will be the .357. Lots of potential with it. I also am getting a couple of grandkids added to our family. One girl 5 years, and one boy 7 years. Good calm caliber to start them off with. But can do what is needed in the field.
