Howa 1500 in .300 win mag
« on: February 14, 2008, 11:17:45 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these rifles in the .300 win mag?  I just purchased one sight unseen on a gun auction and hope to use it out west one day for elk.  I have been reading the forum and for the most part everything I have seen is positive but most of the posts are for the smaller varmint calibers.  Thanks.    ;D
Why is there never enough time to do it right but there is always enough time to do it again?

I have a Vanguard in 300WBY , it shoots great, and I have a Howa 1500 in 25-06 Ditto. You have a very well made gun .I have purchased a Timney trigger for the 06 but I have not installed it yet .I replaced my stocks with Bell and Carlson Medalist stocks  and skim bedded them . I like to get a gun and do one modification a year till I get it the way I want it .Get the scope on and get out and shoot it .You will be happy . If you reload remember belted mags have some unique resizing issues because the sizing die does not quite touch the belt .  Innovative Technologies makes a special collet style die that will resolve this issue .

Try Federal Power (practice) and Vital (hinting) Shok ammo in your 300 WIN Mag - I think your Howa will like it and the price is hard to beat. Make sure you get a rugged scope as 300 Win Mags are used by many for testing scopes.

I had a Howa M-1500 in .300 Win Mag and it was great.  Accurate with any ammo.  With any bullet. Functioned flawlessly.  I sold it to a friend who took a shine to it and he was able to get .75" groups consistently. He loves it and uses it for everything.  HOwa Magnums have the full length magnum (375 H&H) length and you can seat bullets for longer overall cartridge length.

Thanks for the feedback.  What you all say is consistent with what I have read about the 1500's in general.  It is one thing to read about these in a magazine article but it is something else to have other owners of the same rifle have good things to say about it.  This rifle already has a Bushnell scope on it so I can't wait to get it and take it out and put it through the paces.  Thanks again for the feedback     ;D

I have had a Vanguard in 300 win Mag for almost 20 years. It has never failed me. Shoots much tighter groups than my recient purchase Vanguard SMOA in 22-250. I call my 300 "the gun that never misses." It has accounted for several nice bucks, a few long range coyotes, and several grounhogs. I have other rifles that I sometimes take with me on hunting trips, but I always wind up leaving them at camp. I can't go out without that 300. I'm sure you will enjoy yours.
