« on: February 15, 2008, 05:38:52 AM »
Hey All:

I love these guns, here is my new (to me) 18" Shorty 444s Project Gun...

Planning to -

1. Refinish Wood (Black or Granite)
2. XS Ghost Rings and see Thru mount Simmons Whitetail Classis 1-5x20
3. Western Wide Loop Lever
4. Sims Pad
5. Extend Magazine to Crown (hold an additional round)
6. Magazine Light Attachment for Night Time Hog Hunting, removable for Brush Deer Hunting

No sure about what other could be planned...

Let me know your thougths and post examples of your "Custom Jobs"...
SCREAM A LITTLE and I'll see you at the lake, around the beach, on the mountain & in the woods on this side or the other... Ron

id get an action job and a trigger job on it. Get rid of the white line spacers. and instead of a see thru mount consider some quick detachable scope mounts. You can trim a weaver base to leave the back two holes for your xs sight and with quick detachable weaver rings you can pop off your scope and use the xs and pop the scope back on without loosing zero. Personaly i dont care for large loops but thats a personal thing. They are a tad more comfortable with heavy recoil in a straight grpped stock but not nessisary on a pistol grip stock. If it were mine id also consider thinning down the forearm when you refinish the stock. I like the looks of a pistol grip stocked 18 incher with a full tube on it though. It should  be a nice gun when you get it done.

I have a lot of Marlins, but the closet thing to a custom gun would be my 1895G. It has a WWG trigger(best thing I could of done), a one piece firing pin, Bear Proof ejector and aluminum follower with a Levergun Leather custom sling made by Chance. I can't make up my mind on the large loop lever. I think it looks cool but I'm not sure how well it would function because of being too big.

You may have seen some of the photos in the other picture post of my GS. I thought I would post detailed pictures of my LTD-V on this one.

I bought this gun used and loved the gun right off the bat. If you don't know what a LTD-V is here is a little background on them. They were limited distributor models. Five of them made for Davidson's. They came in different configurations. The V has a half round, half octagon barrel and a pistol grip stock. Other than that they are like the 1895 Cowboy.

I took mine and restocked it with wood from Treebone Carving. I had a buddy glass bed it and I did the exterior sanding and finishing.

I didn't like the factory lever loop and I wanted something more traditional. I wanted a lever that was like the originals. Since I couldn't find an original that would work I had to make my own. So I bought a couple of levers of e-bay auctions. I got some pistol grip type ones from an auction by WWG and some straight gripped levers from a private individual. I did some cutting, welding, fileing, and finish polishing and came up with this.

Because the lever had to have finish on it and because it had been welded, I thought it would be best to have it CCH'ed. I sent it, the hammer, the trigger, the forend cap, butt plate and magazine tube cap off to Turnbull Restoration for color case hardening.

I did a few other little things, action job and changed out the front sight for a Lyman globe. I bought it used and it had the Lyman tang on it when it came home.

Here are some of the other pictures.

Overall it is quite a shooter. I like shooting a 300 grain hard cast over 13 grains of Unique. Shoots great.

Hey All:

Thanks for the input...  Hmmm  cut down the weaver, use the Ghost Ring setup sounds like a plan...  Like the Metal Job on the GS...

Keep'em coming...  Got my springs for the loop, it's different from the ones I have seen in the past...

Here is a pic -

I have a 1895g that I have made a custom lever for and have put a full length tub mag on (6 shots), it is at the gunsmith right now getting the mag fastened on properly (either a new dovetail slot or a end screw like on a win94, not sure which he will do, I will post a picture of it when I get it back in the next week or two.  It is not a pretty gun like some posted but it pretty useful with the 2-7 leupold on it, its my go to backcountry/pack gun.

Well here she be, 1895g with a leupold vx1 2-7 on it, extended mag tube and a homemodded lever.  I also cut out the interior ribs on the stocker recoil pad to soften it up a bit.  The mag now holds 6 shots, I can get beefy gloved fingers in the handle and the kick is a little softer with the hot loads.  The lever is currently painted, but I plan on blueing it properly when I tweak it a bit more with some final filing.  i also am looking to fill the old dovetail in the barrel from the short mag tube.  In the meantime it will get dragged all over alberta.
