remington model 742

Will the forearm assembly off of a 308 winchester model 742 function on a 6mm remington model 742? Is there some difference in a short action forar4m and a long action forearm?

It should interchange.

AFAIK, the only difference between long (30-06 length) and short (.308 length) 742's are the mag spring, short follower & filler block inside the rear of the .308-length magazine - which uses a .243/.308 marked, 30-06-size, magazine body.
There may be a difference in the barrel's gas orifice size - I've never checked.
