H&R #42!!
« on: February 16, 2008, 12:59:43 PM »
I went out to Sportsman's Warehouse today to pick up a fuel tank and fittings for a Mercury outboard motor that my best friend's son gave me, SW still has their 10% sale going on, figured I'd take advantage of it. After getting what I needed, I walked over to the gun counter to see what they had in Handis, one of the clerks just walked out of the back room with a new 38-55 in his hand that they just got in, so I grabbed him and took a look at it, first thing I noticed is the better than average wood, then the much better case coloring on the frame than either of mine and the HX serial number prefix, and then expecting to see $349.99 on the price tag, it read $319.99!! On top of that, the sale took another 5% off,   the 38-55 Target has been on my want list ever since the good news about chamber specs and since it's been discontinued, figured now was better than never, so I bought it!! ;D ;D ;D

Tim

EDIT: I just slugged the bore near the muzzle, .3745" at the lands, and .377" .379" in the groove. :-[

I don't drink, smoke, watch sports, play golf, chase women or any of those other bad habits husbands get in trouble for, I have a pretty good life style and healthy hobbies, GBO, guns and reloading, fishing and hunting, not necessarily in that order. I do most of the housework since I'm retired, our home is paid for, and I are handsome, what's there for her to complain about other than she's still got 2yrs until she can retire!!  ;D

Thanks,

Tim

whoa!!  What a find, and deal, and good for you too!  It couldn't have been to a better guy.  Good thing you didn't bite on the 270 fluted.  Sometimes it seems everything works out for the right reasons.

Happy shooting!

I hope so, I thought the replacement stock H&R sent me after they broke my BC stock when it was in for another BC barrel was nice, but this one is a fair bit nicer.

Hey Tim, I really like your hobbies, they're the same as mine.
That sure is a nice looking rifle you got there, I hope it shoots as good as it looks. Be sure to give us a range report when you get a chance to try it out.

GOOD SHOOTING!

More good news, I slugged the bore near the muzzle, .374" at the lands, and .377" in the groove!!!! Not only that, here's a comparison of the wrist wood to metal fit which has been criticized so much in the past, it's much closer to the same size as the frame!! ;D

Tim, that's a nice looking rifle!
From the slugging seems you got a good one, so are you gonna' keep it as-is chambering wise and such?
OR do you have other ideas developing?

(Nice home for metal TG & spacer set anyway! ;))

I wonder if NEF is going to make the 'slimmer' fit of the but-stock standard. It looks great. Tim, is your 38-55 a new out-of-the-factory model?

Read back thru a bunch of 38-55 threads  and after checking the chamber, ordered Starline 2.125" brass, and two different bullets, one is a .380" 280gr FNGC from Mt Baldy, may need to size them to .379", so also ordered a .379" sizer and an RCBS Cowboy die set. The other bullet is a .379" 265gr FNGC Lyman #375296 from Western. I also have my eye on an RCBS 378-312-BPS 82090 mould that makes a 312gr pointy bullet, but it's not a gas checked bullet, it's made for blackpowder velocities which I'm not really interested in, but may get it anyway and put gas checks on them ala dodd3!!
