1894 and 38 specials
« on: February 16, 2008, 05:06:52 PM »
I just picked up a 1894 in .357 magnum today. I was curious if shooting 38 specials through it would cause any problems due to the shorter case. I suppose the same question could be asked about the 1894 in 44 magnum too.

if it will run them reliably it wont hurt a thing as long as you are the type to keep a clean gun. You probably should clean the chamber welll after shooting a bunch of specials before shooting mags again though.

Thanks Lloyd. I don't really know if it's something I will do. However I do have some 38 specials laying around and I was curious. That sometimes gets me into trouble.

Thanks,
Jim

LLoyd,

Is shooting .38's through an 1894 very accurate?  Why does it foul a chamber so badly?  Is it because there is some difference in the .38 and .357 OA length or what?  Thanks.

just a matter of lenght. I had one that was a tack driver with 38s. Actually shot them better then any 357 load i made for it. I guess you never know.

Most of them will not reliably feed .38 wadcutters or semi-wadcutters (due to the shape of the nose of he bullet.) You would have to load these one at a time, right into the chamber.

Also, the .38s hit almost 6 inches lower than the .357 mag rounds.  So, the problem is that if you sight in for .38s, you are going to have to do some real serious adjustments to get it back on center for the .357 mag (which is the round for which it was truly designed.)

.38's are all I shoot...my 1894C will burp out lead all day...I've NEVER had any feed problems.  I primarily shoot cast lead bullets (LRNFP).  Just clean it regularly with Hoppes #9 and a bristle brush and you're good to go.

Ive shot both with no problems.  I was shooting some .357 hand loads, fired a couple of .38 Specials, then put in a .38 short.  Pulled the trigger, heard the hammer strike.  Looked at my friend and said "the d*#n thing didnt go off"! My buddy started laughing.  The round HAD fired, it was just sooo quiet compared to the others!

Had zero'd the rifle with the .357s.  Didnt have any more .357s with me so used .38LFP, aimed at the head of a deer about 45yds away (all I could see) and hit it in the jaw!  Quick follow up in the neck finished it off.  Didnt think there would be that much drop that close.
