A true Gentleman trapper checks his sets from the front seat of a pickup truck while listing to Brooks and Dunn, sipping a French roast coffee. They are often heard saying "Oh there's another double and both are real pale".At least you can skin "flea taxi's" is less than 2 minutes, warm.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

I checked my beaver traps today and caught 1 beaver. It was about 15#. I assume that it was a 1 year old. How big will a 2 year old be? I need a beaver about 25 to 30 lbs for a person interested in mounting one. Also set 2 new areas and tried to set another. Instead of setting it the conventional way we tried to swim after them. Our trapping day ended with 2 trappers up to their thighs in water. We'll be setting that area next week with a different route to the lodge.

Shawn, you will find that the two year olds will be the size you want for the mounting job.
You have also found out,why I wear waders when trapping ice bound rats and beavers.
Coyetero,we call your type of trapping--- Gentleman trapping  lol.

RdFx,When you say the  beaver are covered in fleas do you mean fleas like get on a dog. The reason that I ask this is: This year I can remember 2 beaver that I caught from the same ditch the same day that were absolutely working alive with what appeared to be fleas. After checking them out I found out that they were not fleas at all and were actually called beaver beetles. Thanks,,,Rickey

Never been on snowshoes in my life. But I have waded in waders through some awful deep snow.Be careful with those things, hard to swim with waders and snowshoes on.I have backstroked to shore with waders on,but I doubt snowshoes would even let you dog paddle.
Nice first beaver,I have my first under ice beaver tanned and on the wall.

I need the snow shoes to get through over knee deep snow, to get to the point where I can fall in. Now I'm wondering why I'm doing this.

Tom these bvr were taken  during the winter , never had any in spring or fall that had  fleas.   Another  rare item is i caught a bvr last year that had  like small cockle burrs all over his body.. its as if he never  groomed them out...  the took some effort with hair softner  added to comb them out... This bvr was taken   in northwestern part of Wi, near your stomping grounds.

Move south my friends!!

The snow we get only lasts about 24hrs, and then poof!  It's gone!
What is this ice thing you talk of?  Ice is to keep the beverages in the cooler cold!

Here is Fridays check results, Troy and I had alot of fun in the great white north. 40# beaver, mink, and  rat. Set another good, no great looking spot. Can't wait till the next check. Tom you were right, this beaver trapping is addictive!! All 3 were caught in 330's with poplar and pvc. I think that white pipe helps.

Just thought this topic needed a kick to the top of the page, since the ice won't leave! What kind of 330's does everyone use? I have a mix of brands and my favorite is the one I have a beaver in. Today Troy and I checked some sets and scouted some other areas. We caught a 30 lb beaver by the front foot. This would be no big thing if we were using a foothold trap. But it was caught in a Beliisle 330.Would my Dukes or Victors hold such a catch?

I dont have any Belilses but have heard of bvr caught by front foot  , hind foot web,  tail ect ... ive caught bvr by front feet in  believe it or not  ( old style victors)  .   Like you say  favorite trap is one they are in.    Belilses do hold tight to them....

Gettin' ready to hit water in S. Wis. this week. Once the ice clears up north, hope to get up to my cabin as well. Just talked to Don at Buckhorn and he said prices look good. Could there be a beaver shortage at the May auction? Hope so.
Nice pics Lee.

Skinning to start can be a challenge,as I always say---The first 1,000 are the hardest. After that, its a piece of cake.
I would rather skin beaver, than any other animal.

Haven't skinned a 1000, but have caught and skinned a few over the years. One critter I really enjoy going after, they can be very difficult to catch if they been pinched! Alot of work but alot of fun, later Ray.
May your fur be prime.

Fish, I have never taken 2 otter at once in a 330, but have tripled on them a couple times(3 in 3 different traps).Seems like it always pays to gang set.
