Running Beagles - Central Ohio area
« on: February 17, 2008, 04:58:08 AM »
Hello,

I live in Muskingum County Ohio and hunt and run beagles year round. i also raise beagles and run an aggressive gun-dog style - no brace hounds or slower SPO type. If you'd like to rabbit hunt or just get together and run hounds let me know. I am always looking for new places to run and new beaglers to run with.

Ed
Release the hounds!

Didn't know you had to train them. :o. It comes natural to them. I had a little male that was 18 months old before i ever got him out. Just turned him loose where i knew there was rabbits. Second rabbit we kicked out he took off after it. Run it about 10 feet and started barking like crazy. He ended up to be one of the best rabbit dogs i ever owned. I should rephrase that. He didn't stop after ten feet. He brought it back around to me. I was in the middle of moving and left him with my father in law. The little fool got loose and got out on the main road and was killed by a car. :'(

Bob, that is a shame. That story should never have to be told, but sometimes it happens. I lost mine 3 years ago out on some AEP land. Got down to 7 degrees that night. Next day somebody called me on the red and white, she was 5 miles from where I released her. Found the other one on that guys back property hours later, still hunting! Thank goodness for bells and I.D. tags and honest people.

I had a female and her pup i use to run together. The pup would never come back. Her mother always did. One time i found the pup two miles from where i let them loose. My grandsons dog had just died so i gave him the pup. At one time i had seven beagles and a Rott in the house. All eight of them died of cancer. When my wife passed away i sold the house and moved into town. The two i have now are suppose to be Patch bred. What ever that means. Old age isn't very fun. I sure do miss hunting rabbits. The two i have now sleep with me at night. They have been on the bed sleeping since 6:30 this morning.

I was told by the breader who sold me my red and white that she has some patch hound in her. He said patch hounds were Beagles bread to run faster after the bigger snowshoe hares in upstate NY.
