Suggestions on New De-burring Chamferring tool
« on: July 07, 2003, 02:25:44 AM »
Trying to De-burr and Chamfer .30 Carbine cases with the RCBS handtool is making my hands look like two bird claws so I'm looking for something more automated.

What I have found includes:

The RCBS case prep station which does what I want plus primer pocket cleaning/truing. $$$$.

An attachment for the RCBS case trimmer that does the D&C as part of the case trimming. $$.

Tools for power screw drivers which do D&C. $ ( if you have the screw driver )

Anybody have experience with one or more of the above? Anybody have any other suggestions?

I'm leaning towards something that will hold the case as well as do the job as that is most of the problem, gripping those tiny cases.

Thanks.

I chuck one of the Lee chamfering tools in my drill press and have at it. Lee works best for that since it takes a smaller cut. Fingers work fine even with small cases since it never really bites in.

I wouldn't say I've got enormous hands but griping those tiny .30 cases
tight enough to do good cramps them up.

I use the RCBS power trimmer with a 3way cutter. Trims,de-burrs and chamfers all in one. They are kinda pricey though.  KN

Jack, I doubt I put two pounds pressure on the case. I don't do .30 Carbine, but I have done God's plenty of .32 S&W Long and .380 and batches of 500 don't bother my fingers at all. I have a Forster collet gadget that clamps to the drill press table, but I only use it for trimming and neck turning.

I set the drill prass at a medium speed, and I suspect just pressing the case against the tool for a second gets 15 or 20 revolutions. It don't take much to chamfer and deburr. I even cut the military crimps out with the same method, but I use an RCBS tool for that since I am removing more brass. Granted, .223 and .308 cases give me a better grip.

I dunno how anyone manages to reload without a drill press.

Lee Trimmer and shell holder

 I've got a Lee trimmer for every cartridge I reload.

I chuck the part of the trimmer that holds the brass into a power screw driver and it then spins the brass while I hold the RCBS deburring and chamfering tool stationary.  Works great.  I then wipe on a little brass polish while the brass is still chucked up and wipe off the case lube with a paper towel leaving nothing left to do but clean out the primer hole.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

I've got the RCBS case prep station, it works very well but the noise it makes can become annoying.  I typically use it when I am sizing trimming brass with a Dillon RT1200B case trimmer that sizes and trims the case at once.  If I'm using the RCBS Trim Pro Power case trimmer, I use the RCBS hand deburring tool.  It only takes two turns outside and two turns inside, besides I have to have something to do while the next case is being trimmed.  THe RCBS case prep station does work very well, but as I said, it's kind of noisy.
