Oil Finish Sealer?
« on: February 17, 2008, 05:43:18 PM »
I just refinished my stock with Tung Oil. Do I need to put a sealer on it or polish or wax or something like that ?

Waxing it up makes then look nice but not necessary. If it was real tung oil, it needs to sit a good long while before you do anything to or with it.

Be aware the just because the can says "tung oil" doesn't mean its tung oil. Most tung oils these days are a wiping varnish......which is exactly what stuff like Formbys is. If you were to use actually 100% tung oil which is tough to find the stuff takes forever to dry.

Do a google search on the stuff.......its an eye opener!

This might not be the answer to your question but it is related.

I just yesterday tried some Minwax wood finishing wax on the stock of a Yugo 24/47.  The stock overall was in nice shape but the previous owner had stripped the gunk off it using acetone, which dried it out to the touch and pulled a lot of the old color & patina out.  I originally thought I'd find some boiled linseed oil and start with that but instead used Old English "Scratch Cover" furniture polish (a wood oil with stain added) to bring the color back a bit and the grain out.  I've used this stuff lots and love it.  On the Mauser I rubbed in in with a cloth and then used very fine steel wool to take it off & smooth the finish.

Next step was the finishing wax, which I'd never tried before.  Three coats and it's given the gun a nice smooth finish without having the look of being refinished or finished with Tru Oil or polyurethane.  It's no restoration or anything like that but it does look nice and like what it's supposed to.  -WSJones
