Used Savage 111 270 Win
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:24:56 AM »
I visited my local gun shop today and saw a Savage 111 in 270 Win. priced at $275. The rifle looked to be in very good condition. I had to look close to tell it was used. Is this a fair price? Std. trigger, no extras.

Sounds like a good price if the metal and wood is in excellent condition. Also check the free floating on the barrel using a dollar bill. If it is floated properly, mount a scope and head for the range.

I paid 250 for a slightly older 110 which had some minor scratches on the stock. Also turned out to have a point near the action where the barrel was rubbing (one of the few Savages I have found this on). Removed some wood and it is now an excellent shooter and my favorite rifle.

The only thing I could find was some bluing was worn off the end of the bbl. It has a syn. stock. I'll check the bbl. float. The action was smooth as silk. It had mounts but no scope or rings. I think I'll take another look at it if it is still there this weekend.

I would try and get it for less.  Its only a few dollars less than a brand new Stevens 200, which would also have a synthetic stock and no accu-trigger.  Weaver bases can be bought for less than $5.00.  Don't let that sway your decison

Good point Smokey, a NIB Stevens would be worthwhile to consider especially since the 111 mentioned is pre-Accutrigger and syn stocked.

Price may be a tad higher on a NIB 200 which was going for 300 last time I checked the local gun emporium though w/ prices being what they are, it may have gone up. If the local price on the 200 was in excess of 300 shekels, I'd look at the used 111 since the lower cost could be a consideration as you may want to have a trigger job done at some point to get a nice 3.5lb pull in either rifle.

Good luck Nodlenor, let us know how you make out.

Savage still makes the 111 w/o the accu-trigger so I don't know how old the rifle is. I'm thinking it was a kit rifle and they have taken the scope off. Don't know for sure. I think I'll look it over some more before I decide what to do.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I'll keep you posted.

Decided not to go for it after I looked it over again. Just don't think it is what I want.

He said he was as low as he could go on it, besides I didn't really like it that well. I ended up ordering another brand.
