Cannonmn,
As always an interesting cannon, but you made no mention of the numbers on the rear of the breech below the square casting.
It's hard to make out even after enlarging to 200% but it looks like N? ?58 (No.358)? it might be worth cleaning the layers of paint off
and see what shows up.

That's what I took to be the date 1858. I made a rubbing and it looks more like 1858 than in the photo.

Oops I went back and reread you post........... "Breech face 1858"
I am wondering if there is more there if it is 1858 they did not bother to center it very well
below the square casting.
