Opinions on Rem. 700 at Dick's
« on: February 19, 2008, 09:18:01 AM »
Dick's has the older 700 varmint in 223 and 22-250.  Not the new one with the triangular barrel but the round barrel.  OD Green stock.  Matte barrel. Price is around ~$550.  Comes with a private label scope.  There might be a rebate available.

Anyone have any experience with these?  Is this a good price?  Decent buy?

Thanks!

It is called the SPS Varmint you're looking at and it's not older, it's still a current model and sells very very well. The one with the triangular barrel is the VTR 700 for new for '08.

Quite a few of us here have the SPs varmint model in varying calibers and we all adore them. The scope that comes with the Dicks OD green model is a Tasco, decent scope considering it and the mounts get tossed in at that price. You could sell the scope/rings/bases seperately after the purchase and make some $$ off the deal if you already have a scope waiting in the wings. I would have gone that route but Dicks couldnt order me one in .308

Look at the Thread titles, you'll see a few with SPS-V or Varmint in it. Click on them and enjoy the reading and picture gazing  ;)

A few times last year Dicks had the SPS package deal on sale for $479 + the $30 rebate. I picked mine up last Oct. at the sale price. A hec of deal for a heavy barrel 700 these days.

Mine is the .223 version. Now I did have a spare HS Precision stock and used it right from the start. Installed a Jewell trigger , but the stock trigger was not bad at all for a 700 , just not a Jewell.

The accuracy is impressive with my match bullet reloads. Last weekend was only my 3rd range visit  and the accuracy just keeps getting better! I originally bought the SPS with the intention of using it for my custom project but the accuracy has been so good I might have to keep this one as is!
