BODYGRIP SETTERS.AND OTHER TOOLS OF THE TRADE!
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:00:28 AM »
My favorite tool for setting my bodygrippers(mainly 330s) is the setting tongs. While the push down or pull up setters are fine for pre setting traps on your basement table----they ain't worth a hoot when you are standing waist deep in mud and water, removing a beaver from your trap.
I find the tongs, fast and efficient. One thing to remember when using a setting tongs--NEVER let go of it,when you depressing a spring--it can fly back and knock you into next week.
A rope makes a good emergeny tool, but like the pull type setters-its not real good in a lot of mud and water--also if using a rope--pray that all your spring eyes are closed all the way.

I 2nd that Tom, tongs are the way to go. But i would like to try the new  setter, it works like a clamp with the use of one hand, but 58.99 is a little high for me.

Andy, I was given one of those setters to try out. They are fine for those that lack the strength to use a tongs or other type setters--but they are way to time consuming for me.Tongs is a lot faster.

 TOOL OF THE TRADE#2,
 Safety grippers,
When setting and handling my 330's,I am never without a safety grippers. This allows me to handle my traps without fear of getting caught or setting them off.
This was not always the case, and I have the scars to prove it.As a matter of fact,I always carry a couple with me.
I may leave home without the American Express card--- but I never leave home without my safety grippers.

Tom what safety do you use? I use the Sleepy Creek. I'm a little worried that some day when I remove it I'll have a trap accidentally fire and still get hit on the fingers. Is there a better one? I'm thinking of modifying the one I have to get my fingers farther away from the trap.

I carry 2 sizes, a regular one,and a larger one.The regular one is probably similar in size capabilities as your sleepy creek. You will find that the regular size and your sleepy creek, will be to short for some 330's which causes problems when you try to take them off trap. This doesn't happen with the larger one.

Tom   i make some heavy duty  saftey clamps out of electrical clamps.  Anyone can make them and they are cheap.  I will try and post pictures so trappers can make some  and have idea  what they look like... Like you i carry spares as for some reason bvr  ponds  and waters   have magnetic qualities to them and grab them out of my hands and  all you hear is SPLASH... LOL.

I made this body-grip trap setter years ago.  I can place one end on the toe of my boot and lean down on the other end with my shoulder.  This setter allows me to have both hands free at all times to set safeties and remove the animal.

I still manage to set a lot of my 160s and 330s by hand. It's really not practical when you have a lot of traps to do. So my dry land 160s are set with a push down type setter, the 330s I have a tongs for. I like the push down setter but have to agree it's not much good in the mud and water.
