need help with a 10" barrel
« on: February 20, 2008, 04:49:54 AM »
Hi all !! New here but love the site. I am looking for a new barrel for my t/c and am at a cross road. I hear a lot about the .357 max, but is it too much out of a 10" tube? Recoil and all? I know it is a lot tamer out of a 14" but I like the balance of the shorter tubes. What I am looking for is basically a short range whitetail gun that could be loaded down for practice. Thanks Rick

In the great scheme of things no the Max is by no means too much in a 10" tube, It does have a little kick to it, but to be honest I would not hesitate to recommend it for a recoil sensitive shooter.

I shoot a 357 Herrett out of a 10 inch Contender barrel.  The 357 Herrett is a little hotter than the 357 Maximum and I don't think the recoil is bad at all.

I picked up a 10" 357 Max as part of a package deal, really wanted the 32-20 barrel that came with it, and initially was going to sell it off.  After shooting it though, it's a keeper.  I recommend it.

While I don't have the Max, like Grumulkin I have the Herrett in 10" and agree it is very tolerable.  My 10" 44 Mag sometimes takes me out of "fun" category into "pain" and I have to be in the mood to tolerate it.  I've never put the Herrett away from not wanting to put up with the recoil, even after a hundred rounds in a sitting.  I only have one 14" barrel (7-30 Waters), as I favor the 10" tubes.

Thanks Guys, I want a 100 yard whitetail gun and this sounds like the ticket. If and when I pick it up I'll need help with loads and it looks like I have no shortage of .357 max shooters to help. thanks again

I love my 12" 357 Maximum to.  200 and 220 grain cast lead w/gc are extremely accurate and Hornady 180 XTP's are a great bullet for jacketed.  Win 296 is my powder of choice and a good firm crimp on the bullet seems to improve accuracy quite a bit.
