Type of powder for 50 cal
« on: February 20, 2008, 02:41:46 PM »
I want to start to play with loads with my 50 Optima but have only been using pellets and powerpoints.

What field powder measure should I get?
What type of powder?
What kind of bullet, IF I choose to go with something other than powerpoints or sabots?
Do you just load the bullet on top of the charge with out any patches?

Sorry for all the questions, and any help would be appreciated

Thanks

You can't hardly go wrong with good old Pyrodex RS.

Go to Midsouth Shooters Supply

and get yourself some CLAYBUSTERS / HARVESTER 50 CAL CRUSH RIB BLACK SABOTS HOLDS 45 CAL BULLETS 50 PACK

and some CLAYBUSTERS / HARVESTER 50 CAL SHORT SABOTS HOLDS 45 CAL UP TO 300GR BULLETS 50 PACK

and buy an assortment of 250 and 300 grain .451 diameter jacketed pistol bullets (Hornady XTPs and/or Speer Gold Dots).

Wait until the new Blackhorn 209 power is out and its suppose to be the best and cleaning is susspose to be easier. I would use sabots. You don't need patch's with sabots and any power measure will work if you use loose power. I like T/C's Shockwave or the Hornaday SST sabots. The best thing you can do is try and find what your gun likes. I would also look at Powerbelts or the New Fusion ML sabots from Federal if you don't want a ballistic tip.

Try 3F Goex and you'll never go back.

Bullet selection really depends upon the ranges you expect to have shots at, what makes a good long range ML bullet doesn't always make a good 30 yard bullet...

For shots under 125 yards, the 300gr .451 Hornady XTP in a MMP-12 or MMP-24 sabot is a good start, they can be bought in bulk and a ton of money saved...If this bullet doesn't work, the 250 or 300gr Barnes MZ gives an exit everytime on lung shot whitetails...There are several others that are out there, but I have used both of these to harvest deer...The important thing to notice is that they are both hollow point bullets and not very aerodynamic, so after 125 yards or so, they really start to drop...

Over 125 yards or so, I prefer the T/C Shockwave/Hornady/SST bullest in 250 grains or the Dead Center bullets...I have killed several with the Shockwave, out to 143 yards...I like the design of the Dead Centers, but they didn't hit dead center for me...

A few years back I did some testing with the Barnes, Hornady and Shockwave bullets...Both the Barnes and Hornady grouped well at 100 yards with 100grs of Goex FFF, whereas the 250 Shockwave preferred 90grs of Goex FFF....After sighting in 2 1/2 high at 100 yards with each, I backed up to 150 yards and shot another group....The Shockwaves hit 4-6 inches higher than the others, even with less powder...

On powder, I usually use Goex FFF,  I can still buy it for $11.55 a pound...
I did buy 3 pounds of Pyrodex 3 years ago for $5 bucks a pound, but I've since shot it all up...

If you can get good ole Pyrodex cheap then do it. I still use it every now and then.

Its ok. You have to worry about the T7 crud ring and then if you get the pelllets you are paying more for less power and so on. I use it sometimes but I am looking foward to the new Blackhorn 209 though. If it is like they say it will change Modern ML's again.

Powerbelts i take it?
What grain are you using?  I really like either pyrodex RS, Pyrodex P. Its consistent and doesnt go bad on you after its opened.  Pyrodex select seems to be very good too, I just bought a can.
As for a new bullet to try, TC maxihunters or the hornady great plains conical should shoot great out of that CVA.

If using the 245-295 grain powerbelt, keep your charge down to 80 or 90 grains powder.
