Hog hunts in Missouri/Illinois?
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:23:51 AM »
Been thinking I need to get out and kill a hog, wondering if anyone knew of any places to go?  I've heard that there's a place in the Shawnee National Forest (In IL) that lets you kill them but I don't know who to get in touch with.

I also know that Ft. Leonard Wood (Lostinthewoods) will let you hunt them on the property, but I have heard that you are hard-pressed to find hogs there because they get a fair amount of pressure.

Lots of pressure anywhere in MO. Haven't heard of any new hot spots for quite a while.
Don't know anything about IL. Didn't even know they had hogs showin up there.

Since I posted this I think I may have found some out by Truman Lake around the town of Osceola, and I hear tell of some down in the Ava area south of Springfield.

Try hunting around wappello lake near popular bluff mo. You can call the conservation dept for hog reports. Lots of hogs there.

It's funny you should say that, I went down there last weekend.  The lake was up into all the swampy areas so it was an exercise in futility.  I'll try again once the lake goes down.

I have a son at Ft Leonard Wood.  When he checked about hogs on post a couple of months ago, he was told that there are no longer any hogs there.  They had been taken care of.  Not to say that they won't be back, but that there was a lot of hunting pressure and they had been eliminated from the post.

I am in the Peoria area and have been thinking about hog hunting also.

d_hiker, isn't there a guy down around Pekin that has some hogs and lets people come in and hunt them? If memory serves, I think it on a creek down there?

I haven't heard of him.  I'll have to ask around.  I know a few people down in the Pekin area.  I have a friend that has a farm with cows.  If I want to buy the cow, I can take it any way I want.  When you pull up in the pasture they come right up to you, you don't need camo, a blind or a call.

Just heard the name of the town on local tv, he's in Spoon River Illinois? Can't remember the name of the hunting spot.

I am somewhat acquainted with Fulton and Mason Counties along the Spoon River, but I haven't heard of a town named Spoon River.  But there are several small towns down that direction.  Member Paints-n-cows isn't too far from the river, maybe he can shed some light on the topic.

In doing a search I also found a Spoon River east of Urbana, IL.
