Las Vegas. Two thumbs down.

Am returning from Vegas. Nice environment for a business convention if somebody else is paying the bills. Can't see why anyone would want to go there for any other purpose.

Nonya:

That is an interesting choice of words. When my wife picked me up at the airport I told her that I now feel qualified to render an opinion based on personal experience, and I used your words exactly. It was one of those rare cases when I use a swear word.

I enjoy the golf in the area but that is just about all----AND, there are better places for golf.
I have lost nothing there over the years but time wasted.

I went there for a scientific educational meeting. I wasn't ever tempted to play hooky from the sessions. I did enjoy touring Hoover Dam. Other than that, it was a waste of time. Borrrring ... . If my meeting ever goes back there, I'll just stay home and read a book.

I also lived in Las Vegas for a brief period, but being in the military I lived a lot of places. Las Vega is like many other places I lived, it is all what you make of it!  There is a lot to do and see in/around the Vegas area without concentrating on the casino scene.  The casinos were nice for an occasional meal, or for a show, but I mostly steered away from the gambling.  You don't have to be a genius to figure out the bright lights of Vegas don't remain on from giving their money away, all games, including the slots are in favor of the house, with the exception, perhaps,  of poker.  While there, I worked part-time on slot machines, after spending some time inside one I reached the conclusion that I would never again feed a machine.

Life in Vegas can be as pleasant as any other place if you stay off the strip.  I enjoyed the hunting, and the fishing was also fairly good.  I am a rock hound so it offed a great opportunity to seek out semi-precious stones, pan for gold, and look for artifacts. As I said, I lived a lot of places around the world, and didn't find Vegas that bad, all things considered.

Went to Vegas in the mid '90's for the Shot Show. City itself wasn't all that bad. Wife and I did more sight seeing, flew over Grand Canyon, Hover Dam. Less than a month after we got back, an airplane crashed that had 8 or 10 nuns on it from the Philippines, so we considered ourselves lucky in that respect.
Might go back again if the Shot Show ends up back there and I can work it into our schedule. Going to Orlando next year. Kids and wife will spend most of the time at Disneyland, and I'll go to the Shot Show for a day or so. gypsyman

Been out there several times with wife. (its been a while tho) Went to gamble and see a show or two. Were never disappointed. Las Vegas started going downhill (IMO) when all the cheapa$$es and old farts started going out there just for the freebies.  We always planned on going during the week. On the week end, it fills up with Californians that show up with $20, sleep in their cars, and expect to run that $20 up to 2 million while they're waiting to be discovered.

If you go out there to win money (snicker, laugh), you're on a fool's errand. Kinda like going to the movies and expecting to find $20 in your popcorn. :D

I went there to install a booth at a trade show. I'm not really into gambling or drinking so it was pretty boring for me. The highlight of my trip was when my boss handed me 300 bucks and said go have some fun. I put 60 dollars into a slot machine and pocketed the rest.

It was interesting to watch the people though, they reminded me of those cocain monkeys that would pull the lever for more coke but wouldn't pull the one for food and died. Kind of a depressing analogy but......

Pretty fun place to be during the Nat. Finals Rodeo, if you're lucky enough to have a friend competing you can get lots of comps. Driving down by the dam you can see desert bighorns, sometimes they are in the park in Boulder city.

They should have left the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City.

I enjoyed the people-watching -- young couples wondering if they could afford this 'nice' french restaurant...rich young men throwing $900 down on a craps table...ancient cocktail waitresses trying to earn a living...but I was not impressed with Las Vegas itself.  I was there only a few hours after enjoying nearby Arizona on a test trip.  If you go to LAS, try to see the Hoover Dam.

Las Vegas is what you make of it. There is something that almost anyone would enjoy.
I was there for the SHOT show and then went back for another show a week later. I enjoyed both trips, long days but great food.
This time I did not gamble any.

Been there twice, don't want to go back. The Hoover Dam and Red Rock canyon trips were nice, but casinos suck. Boring to say the least. It is rather comical to see these idiots trying to win money, when the odds are not in their favor. They don't build casinos from winners. What really blows is being charged $4.00 for a 12 oz bottle of coke while on the strip. Every service you get, the person is looking for a tip. I should be left a tip for staying at your x-hole motel.

Las Vegas is the warmest, least expensive place to go that will get you away from a cold midwest winter for a week. In the past we rented a room for $25 per night at the Lady Luck casino. We ate steak and baked potato for $4 at the horseshoe casino.Lobster and steak for $9. Breakfast was $4 also at several places. The light show in the downtown casino area was really fun to watch. Visited every gunstore/range in the whole metro area. Went to the shot show once and my first NASCAR race a different time.(rooms were higher during nascar week)

Did I mention airfare non stop from Green Bay was $79. Whats not to like? You don't have to live there..................

If you had ANY idea how many unsuspecting tourists like you are robbed and/or killed in LV you would never take anyone you care about there.90% of these incidents dont make the news, thats where the slogan started,I know a vice cop there and he explained the gruesome details to me,also explained how the incidents do not get reported to the public to keep the towns rep intact, the town is a cesspool.

Please elaborate on how many tourists are robbed and killed per year that go unreported.  And what makes you think I am unsuspecting and am without some protection while visiting anywhere? I guess if we give in to the evil in society by completely steering clear of all places they might frequent then the game is over. Do I advocate going clumsily headfirst into a situation, no I don't,  but I don't want to spend my life cowering in the corner neither.

They go unreported in the public press. There are plenty of cops killed in LV,you think they go unaware and unarmed.Even the cops there are dangerous, there was a whole anti gang unit on the LVMP dept that were convicted of doing DRIVE BYS with automatic weapons stolen from the evidence room.I lived there for a few years and I have a good friend who is an officer there, dont think you are safe anywhere in LV,especially walking down the strip between casinos, why do you think they built that sky tram????I dont give a dam what you believe,I lived there and I know.

I'd like to get a little more info about that myself, Nonya. The times I (we) were there, hordes of people were walking everywhere, unafraid.  If they were so many sheep to the slaughter, the word would get out. It might not get reported in LV but I'm sure when Uncle Charlie didn't come home, there would be some questions asked on Sixty Minutes.

DO a  google search on LAS VEGAS MURDER and then LAS VEGAS ROBBERY,if 10% of the major crimes there make it to the news it doesnt take a genius to figure out how bad it is there.

Monya , give up you are preaching to sheeple !
you know the deal like most people that watch what goes on !
My wife worked at the Mall they had to park away from the building and about every 3-4 weeks some one got raped , never got on the news or in the paper DIDN'T WANT TO HURT SALES !
that was 25 years ago don't even think it got better ! that Mall is closing mar.11 . To much crime has hurt sales go figure !
crowds are a joke , 2000 people that don't know each other with bright lights in their eyes don't make good watch dogs !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

That city is 100% dependent on its image, there is nothing but tourism in Vegas. They manage to keep 90% of the serious crimes from being leaked out to the public news.My vice squad friend told me about a multiple homocide that he had just helped clean up,7 bodies found in an empty lot after a gang shoot out on night, absolutely nothing in the paper the next day, nothing on the news,NADA.He told me there is a VERY high number of suicides in stip hotels that never make the news as well,he said the morgue was so full they were renting frozen locker storage to store all the bodies they had to autopsy. If you dont believe its true then live in denial,I could care less.

There are two things I like about Vegas, it's 500 miles from me and they pay a big chunk of my taxes ;D
