I have just bought a box of Winchester 22 mag Dynapoints.  Being new to the rifle business, I am not exactly sure what that is. Is it like a hollow point, or a fmj, or neither? being a 45 gr bullet and only costing $5.47 at walmart was appealing, but i cannot find what a dynapoint is in any of my searches on the web.I know that its ballistics arent quite as good as the 40 gr Winchesters or CCI's, though.

I'd appreciate any info.
thanks

My guess is that Dyna point means nothing. Probably the old boys at a winchester board meeting came up with it while slurping coffee and eating donuts.
Don't be surprised if that cheapo ammo shoots very well. I know of one Sako Finnfire that loves it!

The Dynapoint did not shoot well in my rifle, but I'll try some more when I find where I laid the box. My guess is that it was a try at a less destructive small game round for the .22 WMR.

The Federal 50 grain WMR is a splendid small game round. It has a MV of about 1500 fps in rifles and kills much better than .22 LR without destroying as much meat as the higher velocity rounds.

Some .22 WMR ammo is as fast as 2300 fps. That makes a fine varmint round but doesn't leave much eating meat. You have to match your ammo to what you are doing.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.

I have a bunch of older Dynapoints in .22LR.

Winchester made the Dynapoint to have a full weight 40 grain bullet with a standard ogive, but with a dimple of a hollow point pressed into the nose.  It is not supposed to be as deep as a standard hollowpoint, so it will give more expansion than a solid, but not blow up like a regular hollow point.  They are supposed to have deeper penetration too.

They are accurate in all of my rifles, and my revolver.

From waht I see on Winchester's ammunition web site, the dynapoint
22 mag 45gr bullets have a MV of 1550fps with 240FPE.
At 100yds. it is doing 1147fps and has 131FPE
Sounds like it is on par with Federal's 50gr load. I guess it depends on how well it shoots in your gun.
Back in the 70's, I used winchester dynapoint .22LR to hunt nutria and it worked well. The bullet was supposed to expand to a T shape in cross section and not fold back like typical hollowpoints and that is just what they did. That little dimple did the trick and were very accurate as well.
God created man, Col. Colt made him equal.
