I use a sand bag or even a bag of shot to rest a rifle on at the bench.

Come on guys!  I would also like some preferences.  Right now I use a bag from Dog Gone Good.  But am looking at the Hart shooting rest.  Please give me some responses.

For a great set up...I use the Caldwell Rock and a rabbit eared rear rest for the stock. There are lots more expensive out there - but this does the job for me. Sand bags are great - but really hard to adjust. If your shooting off a bench - go for the rest. Do not know what the Hart rest looks like - but it has to be more adjustable than the sand bag......

I use a Loh rest w/ windage top if working the bench or shooting comp and about to aquire a Farley rest.  If you are wanting to determine the true accuracy of a rifle a rest is the way to go (as well as wind flags).    I personally like windage tops unless you can succesfully bag squeeze, which I can't.  The rear I use a Protektor rabbit ear/codura.  shooting varmints I use a bag.  Personally I believe any quality rest will work once you learn to shoot from it and it's personality.  I use a Loh rest only because I traded some work for it and I am going to a Farley for speed purposes when running a group.

The best thing to shoot off of if you are "just learning", is your hind feet, you can't learn to shoot from a bench.  Benches are ok for checking ammo but then stand up and you will start to learn.  All good standing shooters are pretty darn good bench shooters.  The opposite is seldom the case however.  You will become a better shot faster this way as well so it is less expensive in the long run.
