What would happen as far as on game performance, If you replaced the polymer tip on a Hornaday sst or Tc shockwave with a steel tip?

If it were constructed to the same configuration as the polymer tip, the bullet would probably perform exactly the same.  The polymer tip does not flatten or break up when it hits a deer.  It initiates expansion of the bullet.  You often find the tip in perfect shape somewhere in the carcass.

first it sounds like you will be making an armor piercing bullet and the ATF may want to talk with you.
then you may not be able to use it for hunting

What about the powerbelts that are made from steel for dangerous game, are they illegal?

Thanks

I never have heard of this. Do you have a link? Also why would you want a steel tipped ML bullet as it will expand the same basically.

30/06,

i do not have a link, but I saw them, I believe in a Cabelas catalog a couple of years back. They looked similar to the Aero-tips but the tip was made from steel. As I recall they were for dangerous game, and were very expensive.

I am going to check on CVA's website and see if they are still available.

30/06,

I checked and they apparently don't make them anymore.

But I did a yahoo search for "steel tipped powerbelts" and found that Impact Guns still sells them. $61.99 for a 15 pack....OUCH! although they do not have a picture so you can see what they look like.

I would give you a link but I'm not sure how(sorry)

Buckhammer74,

Steel tip or polymer tip, I really don't think you would change performance much. You are still going to have the same bullet behind the tip. Like others said, the tips usually don't deform too much.

The PowerBelt Dangerous Game Bullets are no longer on the PB site, which would suggest to me that they were way overpriced and not too many actually used them. The steel ogive is smaller diameter than the copper that actually obturates into the rifling. Here is a pic and a bit of information.

No not true. What's your grounds for attacking powerbelt for this? I tried many loads in my 45cal Encore and the most accurate was the 195 grain powerbelt pushed by 100 grains of T7. Other ML's of mine won't shoot Powerbelts all to well.
