.280 Remington Elk Load
« on: July 08, 2003, 03:24:48 AM »
Hey Folks,

Looking to go elk hunting (sometime) and my primary rifle will be a .280 Remington.  I know that this isn't the #1 elk cal. but I shoot it well and will keep ranges reasonable.  I handload so my options are pretty much unlimited.  If anyone here has used the .280 in the past for elk I'd appreciate bullets choices/performances thay you may have.  Thanks in advance.

Sorry i dont have any experience with the 280, but i did use a 7 rem mag for a few years...  i just wanted point out that the 280 may not be the #1 elk caliber out there, but its sure not a bad one.  Id rather use it than a 7 rem mag if that says anything.  A 280 has slightly lower velocity which is a good thing in my opinion, a 160 grain partition would be a good choice.  I live in elk country and my dad sometimes carries a 7mm 08 with partitions for elk if that says anything

I've used my Remington 725 .280 Rem. to kill elk. My handload is the Nosler Partition 160 gr. bullet, in front of 54 grs. IMR 4350, standard CCI Large Rifle Primers. Chrono'd at 2872 FPS, 22" barrel. I've had two, one shot kills on bull elk, neither being more than 225/250 yards.

If you shoot accurately, and use a good bullet, the .280 Rem. will do its job on elk.

In factory loads, the Federal Premium 160gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw did the trick for me in my .280.

High Brass,

Last year I saw two elk punched in the lungs - one with a 30-06 and the other with a 270.  Both ran for about a hundred yards before putting almost any blood on the ground.  Your rifle will put them down if you hit well.  Have faith in the caliber and follow up for a good distance on your shots.  Have a great hunt
