Which caps to use ?
« on: July 08, 2003, 04:52:54 AM »
Have just purchased my first B/P - T/C Black Mountain Magnum .50 cal, 1 in 28 twist. The gun came with a musket cap nipple at least that's what the write up says but the manual keeps referring to a No. 11 nipple. The nipple installed in the gun is larger than the extra one. The smaller appears to be No. 11 as it accepts No. 11 caps. I plan to shoot either Pyrodex pellets or Pyrodex R/S. Which nipple is better (hotter ?).

The larger one will be the musket cap nipple.  Musket caps are certainly hotter than #11s but that doesn't necessarily make them better.
If you are going to use pellets the musket caps are probably the better choice.  I would recommend RWS caps either way.

No Question about it......The Musket Cap will give you a hotter ignition.  The real question, however, is which one gives the best performance?  Does the #11 cap give consistant ignition?  Some times the larger cap  will effect both ignition and accuracy, so you just have to try them both.  I prefer to use powders instead of pellets and it always ignites easier than the pelletized version.  By the way.....try Pyrodex Triple 7...much better than the RS and pellets.
