I have been working a lot of overtime lately (12 hours a day, 7 days a week for a couple of weeks) and am getting a pretty good tax return so I'm thinking of getting another toy for the collection. The original problem was I couldn't decide between a smith and wesson m29 or another 1911.

Problem solved I'm getting both. I am going to put the more expensive one on layaway and make payments.

My question is this: I have always wanted a colt 45, but have heard some models had problems. I don't know anything about the different series (60, 70, 80) so which model would you guys recommend.

I was told there is a ww1 reissue that's pretty nice. I'm looking for a full sized, blued 1911,

Jim - I would say go for a Series 70 if you can find one. Their only problem is the collet barrrel bushing, which is replaceable with the usual solid style bushing. The pre-Series 70 are just as good. The Series 80 have the internal safety, aka firing pin block and a number of folk have complained that it affects the trigger pull.

I believe the re-issue is a WWII re-issue and that should be a good one. HTH. Mikey.

Colt makes both the WW2 and WW1 reproductions....I'm hooked on that WW1 model...I drool every time I see one. No extra firing pin safety in the reproductions
either. And the bluing looks like the old blue too.
Don't know how many of these they will make altogether, or if they are done yet, but I still see them every once in awhile.

I have a 70 series Colt Gold Cup National Match. I've had it a long time and shot it a lot. Not one hiccup, ever. I love this old gun and so does my oldest grandson. It is promised to him when it is time.

I found a local store that could get me a ww 1 reissue, so I ordered it, can't wait until it gets here.

I picked up my colt yesterday and I'm not happy. I specifically told the salesman I wanted the carbonia blued model. Well I ended up with the black oxide finish as the blued is no longer available(so I was told). It is my own fault for leaving the store with it, but in my defense I've been working 12 hours a day 7 days a week for the last month and I was not in a clearheaded state of mind when I was there. This has really been bothering me, I paid extra for them to order it so I ended up paying more than I wanted for a gun I don't want. They guy I dealt with is out of the store until Wednesday so I'll just have to wait until then. He was an assistant manager so I want to deal with him first. I hope he takes care of me as I like this store and can think of 7 guns off the top of my head that I've bought there(a few of them were fairly expensive models) plus a couple of nikon scopes and quite a bit of ammo. I don't believe they usually take returns on firearms but hopefully since I'm a pretty good customer and considering the circumstances maybe they will this time.

Grimjim - I would just take it back and tell him it is not what you had ordered and not what you want. It is also not what you paid for. Give him the chance to make good on the deal by getting you what you want. Mikey.

I agree....last time I looked at the Colt site I thought they still advertised that blue?

Well...ya...take it back with a printed picture of one in blue and tell him that's what you wanted.

I tried to take it back but the manager says since I left the store with it now it's a used gun and he'll give me the bluebook price on it as a trade in. Do you believe that? I am never stepping foot in that store again and was very happy to let him know that also. He really didn't seem to care. Just off the top of my head I bought my AK, Bushmaster, Remington 700, Ruger mk 3 prohunter, S&W 686, Springfield mil spec 1911, Kimber raptor, and of course this Colt, not to mention a couple of Nikon scopes and quite a bit of ammo. I haven't spent millions of dollars there but I would say they lost a pretty good customer.

Every time I look at this gun it ticks me off. I'm thinking of putting it in the classified section and see if any one will trade me for something I want, or maybe on gunsamerica I can find a dealer to trade with me for a blued one or if I have to have a black Colt I'll take a new gold cup in trade. Hope I don't get in trouble for mentioning that here. I'm just weighing my options, this is not an offer for sale or trade.

Jimster, according to another salesman I was talking to Colt had some kind of falling out with the company that did the bluing so now they are only available in the black oxide finish. Whether or not that is true I don't know for sure.

Sorry to hear about that Grimjim, I don't blame you for being upset.
I think as ornery as I am I would get hold of Colt and tell them their advertisement on corbonia blue really messed you up, and to stop advertising it. It's still on the Internet as blue.
I would also let them know the name of the store you bought it from and tell them what happened there. Non of this may do you any good...but hey, you don't have anything
to lose.
Tell that manager in that store, every pistol in his window that has been touched and fondled is used as well..tell him those should be blue book prices also....I bet his blue book price thing
won't hold up then would it...? I also bet if he bought it back from you for "blue book price"...you would walk in there and see it selling for the original price you paid the next day.
But that's just the way it is in a lot of places I guess...guns are like cars when it comes to dealers.

Seems like I read somewhere that Turnbull was doing the corbonia blue for Colt, don't remember....

I would also suggest sending a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. I used to think that was a waste of time until I did it with Delta Airlines. We were taking a family vacation and had the flights purchased about 9 months in advance to get the best fare. A couple months before our trip, Delta rescheduled the flights such that we would be stranded in Atlanta over night, flying home the next day. I called to question it and was told that they can reschedule flights at any time, and are not required to compensate the customer for the inconvenience. We could either 1. book a hotel for the family at our own expense, 2. fly into Boston and get a one-way rental car to drive home, or we could cancel our flights and book them with someone else. I said something to the effect that so even though we bought tickets months ago, and we have a written contract from you to fly us home in one day, you are saying that you can do what ever you want, leave the family stranded overnight, and tough crap if we don't like it"? His answer was, and I quote, "pretty much".

We decided the hotel in Atlanta was the best option, but I send my complaint to the BBB. The BBB really got on their case with a nasty letter. I got confirmation back from the BBB including the name of the person at Delta they contacted, and a reply from Delta to them that they would be happy to comp us our hotel and meal expenses. I contacted Delta and they were real apologetic. They did indeed pay for our hotel room and gave us meal vouchers for that night as well.

Sometimes it does pay to take it to the next level instead of just taking it on the chin. The dealer made the error, and they should make it right. If the gun has never been fired, it is still new. I once bought a shotgun for a birthday present. My girlfriend at the time did not feel her teenage son was old enough for it (my mistake for not discussing it with her in advance). I returned it and got my money back without any trouble at all.

I just filed a complaint with the bbb. I'm like you in thinking it won't do much but you never know. I'm sure it will work out in the end.

I guess I would contact Colt first and find out if the carbona blue gun is still available. It could be that your dealer just screwed up and ordered the wrong one. 44 Man

Hey Jim; I've had a few of those bad gun days myself. Hope that works out for you alright.

I went to a Gun Show in Stigler, Oklahoma today. They had quite a variety of .45 autos. I own a S&W 9mm auto, but never owned a .45, so I just started at one end picking each one up and just getting a feel of it. When I picked up a Colt Commander in stainless steel I thought I was in heaven. Man those are sweet. Made me start wondering what I could trade off to have one of those.

Yeah, I always heard people raving about the 45's but never shot one. Just out of curiosity I bought a springfield mil-spec. Now I have a kimber raptor, the colt I am waiting on and I am building a race gun out of an amt. I am completely hooked on 45's now.

I just love people who lie to you because they have your money. My son-in-law had the same deal. Dealer told him it became used when he left the store with it and all he could do was give him wholesale price to take it back.

A few weeks ago I was at my local gunshop visiting with John, the owner, when a very pretty but very unhappy young lady came in. She said "I want to return this, he didn't want it". Seems she had bought a single action revolver for this guy and he told her he wouldn't shoot that thing, take it back and get a semi-auto. John told her "Sure, do you want your money back or do you want to trade it for something else"? He filled out a form , she signed it and he put the gun back in the counter. She wound up trading for one pistol and buying another. It's all in the dealer.

That's the way I felt also, it's all in the dealer. I was actually surprised when this happened. I have had a good relationship with this gun shop and really didn't expect this. He said he couldn't resell it as a new gun which really meant he wouldn't. I won't be back there.

As for the gun I traded it straight up for a gold cup national match, it should be at my ffl guy tomorrow.

Colt had originally planned on making 4000 of the carbonia blue 1911's and then extended it to 5000.
My understanding is that it was always intended t be a limited run.
The new black 1911 is not a limited run and should be available until sales plummet.
I've seen a dealer take a 'used' gun in very good shape and sell it as new. Not what I call strong in the integrity department.

GrimJim. are you or is a gunsmith building your "racegun" on an amt? I have never met a smith who will build a racegun on an AMT. the stainless has a nasty reputation for galling when you tighten the frame/slide.
