cz 550 fs
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:25:04 PM »
I've been looking for a good Mannlicher Schoenauer and they are too expensive or the barrels have been shot out. Saw the CZ 550 fs in 270. I have a cz bob white s/s in a 20 and I am very satisfied with it. Has anyone had experience with the 550 fs (accuracy, durability etc)?

I have a 550 American an it the the most accurate rifle I own.  That would be better than Sako, Tikka, Remington and Savage.  Now all these rifles (except for the Remington - for now) will shoot one ragged hole at 100 yards the 550 will make an even smaller ragged hole.  It's in 6.5 x 55.

Hi There,

The problem with Schoenauer's is that in 6.5x54 MS chambering is that ammunition is not so easy to obtain and even cases are not as easily got hold of as once was the case. I recently had a Model 1903 re-barreled but a gunsmith located a new Steyr made barrel already fatory chambered in 6.5x54 MS and that is was what was fitted. The Schoenauer is a wonderful action and although it's the 6.5mm that most folks think of it was offered in 7x57mm, 8x56mm, 9x56mm, 7x64mm, 270 Win, 30-06, 358 Win and I believe also 243 win. The later ones had different bolt handles and there was also an even upmarket model known as the GK.

I don't know about the FS. But I did have a 550 American in 270 and it was overall an excellent gun. I sold it because I really don't need more than big game rifle and I liked my 375H&H custom rifle better and my son is left-handed and we decided to get him a left handed rifle.  Bought it as a backup gun for a handgun pronghorn hunt, then didn't need it anymore.

But that CZ would shoot 1/2 inch groups with varmint bullets and it shot everything else well. The only things I didn't like about the CZ is that it needed to be bedded to hold a zero and it was a tad heavier than I would have liked.

We also had a CZ youth 22 rifle that was truly superb. Sold it because the kids outgrew it.

My personal 22 is a CZ Lux and I love that rifle. It's excellent and I don't see any reason to ever sell it.

I like CZ products and would buy another.

How would you describe the trigger? The CZ is attractive in many ways, but i don't have any single-set trigger experience and have been wondering...

Personally I can only comment on a Kepplinger Single sett trigger as one rifle I have have has one fitted to it and it's a real nice piece of work! I have shot a couple of 527's and don't recall any problems with the trigger they seem to work just fine and are I believe adjustable.
