I'm the new guy here.
I've a couple handi's a 30-30 that is currently having a face lift, a 223 Ultra which is just perfect as is, and a 22 LR sportster compact that I just bought for my daughter.
I've hunted most things in the U.S. but I'm stuck on black bear hunting, mostly with the "old 30-30".

Hope to learn plenty here.

What is being done with the .30-30?

My .30-30 Handi shoots great, I have a medium-duty load of 16.0 gr. of 2400 with a Hornady 100 gr. Short Jacket that shoots 1-1/16" at 100 yd.  I can't ask for anything better than that.  My other is a .45-70.

Trigger, o-ring, some file work to the forend, and a paint job. Also a williams peep sight, shorter LOP and limb saver.

I have a Handi in 30-30 and another in 30-40 Krag I would like to try the load in for a light coyote load if you think it would work...

Quick, what say you about that use for woodchukhntrs load of 16.0 grains of 2400 behind a 100 grain SP bullet?

I'd say use it at your own risk, I have no source for that load in any of my books, Hornady doesn't use 2400 in their 30-30 data for the 100gr SJ, Lyman shows 2400 used with 170gr cast bullets, Alliant doesn't list 2400 for use with the 30-30 either, got a source of data woodchukhntr?

I have been using the load for a while, and don't remember where I got it.  I'll try to look it up this evening.

In the meantime, check out C.E. Harris' "The Load" (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_19_46/ai_65017381) of 13.0 gr. of Red Dot with any bullet up to 180 gr. in the .30-40.  I have used it in the .303 British, .308, .30-06 with success.  It is, however, too hot for the .30-30!

Unless I'm messing around with a new load I use the same Lyman 173gr cast from WW with 9.5gr of Unigue or 26gr of h335 for all my small and big game hunting. For the tree rats and rabbits it punches a nice .309 hole, and for deer and bear it drops them quick.

Great info coming out of this thread guys, lets keep it coming!!! How about some loads for the 30-40 using Blue Dot? Especially something similar to the low level 30-30 loads with a light bullet? Anything on this woodchukhntr? I have a 30-30 and a 30-40 and would like a nice light load with a light bullet for coyotes and such. My 30-40 is turning out to be a real tackdriver and I would like to use it for coyotes, that 30-30 load you had with the light bullet sounded great, now to figure out something similar for the 30-40....<><....:)

OK, I found the data for the .30-30  2400 load with the 100 gr. SJ Hornady.  I have attached the data sheet that came with the bullets.  The box is quite old, I wouldn't be surprised if it was from the 60's or 70's.  It starts with 19 gr., but I started with 16 gr., probably with data from another source.  Interpolating the data, I figure that 1700 - 1800 fps would be close.  It is somewhat in the .32-20 power range.  I'm not loading it for power, maybe later, but for 100 yd. shooting.


I want to try some cast bullets, and will report when I can.
