H&R 38/55
« on: February 27, 2008, 05:54:36 AM »
Hello guys have a chance to pick up a 38/55 H&R rifle it has the Williams rear sight a globe front, how many models did the make in this caliber. could not find them listed in the on line  catalog.  How do you tell if it is the target model. the firearm is unfired and the guy wants $280.00 should be worth that. I don't see them very often in Idaho maybe not paying attention.

Thanks
Kirb

The 38-55 is the Target model, it was discontinued this year, accessory barrels are still available tho. The Williams WGRS is the standard rear sight as well as the 17A Lyman front sight, barrels are 28", anything made prior to 2007 (HX) serial number prefix, will likely have a large groove diameter and will require .380" or larger cast bullets to shoot well, but the caveat is they had tight chamber necks so bullets that size can't be chambered. Late 2007 models appear to have improved, several new ones bought since early-mid 2007 have had decent bores and chambers, although not all of them. If the rifle you're looking at has an HW or prior serial number prefix(see FAQS), be prepared to have the chamber neck reamed and use oversize cast bullets in it to get it to shoot well. I just bought one new at Sportsman's Warehouse for $304 for comparison pricing, their regular price is $320, but they had all their firearms and optics on sale 5% off a couple weeks ago.
