Scopes, Red dots or Irons, what's your favorite?
« on: July 08, 2003, 01:59:24 PM »
Another question just to be asking. but I am curious. In my limited experience I like red dots on hunting handguns but for a back-up (to my rifle) hunting gun give me a short barrel and irons everytime. In case a fat doe walks in close or something just needs a hole in it.

What about you guys?

It depends on the situation. When I am hunting off a stand with long shots at deer, a scope. When hunting off the ground with quick shots, a red dot.

I kinda agree with bigbore, except for close shots I have always used iron sights. BUT, I have just been introduced to red dot sights, and I think they're really sharp. I just gotta deside which gun to put one on. (Especially now that sights are starting to get a lot fuzzier than they once were.)

Revolvers and iron sights go together.  Single shot pistols need a scope to realize the accuracy and range.  The way I see it, a revolver is a relativley short range easy to carry weapon, even though some are capable of terrific long range accuracy.  A single shot pistol is a short rifle that is more challenging to hunt with than a rifle but has a similar, within reason, range and needs optics to realize the performance potenetial.  Red dots are slick and I used one for a few years but they now sit on my shelf gathering dust.  They don't offer the precision needed for true long range hunting and revolvers are meant to have iron sights.  My opinion, nothing more.

I use a red dot on my Contender and my shotgun. Where i hunt 50 yards would be a long shot. In this type of deer hunting the dot is great.

I use iron more on the backup guns.  Scope are for my primary hunting guns.  I haven't use the red dot.  My Dad like the red dot over the scope.

Depends.  I have a Mag-na-port Stalker w/scope and a Predator w/irons, both built on Freedom 83s.  For a while I had a SBH with a red dot.  I liked that for sneaking around under the pines, but when it got towards evening, I had to go back to irons.  So now I just use irons for the thick stuff.  Key to that is to practice so when you bring the gun up, the sights are aligned.  For stand hunting where the ranges are longer or for hunting state land, I carry the Stalker w/2x scope.  It has become my favorite hunting gun, period.
