Which Scope Base is the Best?
« on: February 29, 2008, 01:55:30 PM »
I finally got a little range time with my new 45/70 this afternoon. The open sights aren't the best in the west but I was planning on mounting a good scope on the rifle anyway. I'll completely remove the open sights once I scope the rifle. I know that Handi makes a base but Leupold and a few others make bases that fit the Handi. Who makes the most preferred base for my rifle?

There is nothing wrong with the standard NEF base as far as I am concerned and you KNOW that it is going to fit.

All the bases made are listed in the FAQs, the H&R base is the most popular, the Weaver #82 the worst of the bunch, the Leupold is a little shorter than the H&R. The H&R is the only one to come with a hammer extension.

Thanks for the reply, I did read the FAQ on scope bases. I was wondering which base most of our members preferred if there is a preference? Another question, what is the difference between the standard Handi scope mount and the ultra scope mount? Height?

On edit, I'll be mounting a Leupold 3-9 X 40 most likely.

Heh heh, the standard is available, the Ultra isn't!! :D If you read the FAQs, the pics show the difference, but it's a moot issue, they don't make the Ultra any more, it was discontinued last year.  :-\

Hmmmmm, They still list the Ultra on their web site. I would take it that the Handi standard mount would be what I need then. Especially since it comes with the hammer extension.

I just took a pic of the Leupold and H&R rails for the FAQs, Leupold on top, the Leupy is just a tad lower than the H&R rail, .409" compared to .428" for the H&R.

So the Leupold is a tad shorter too which would reduce the amount of overhang. I may go with a Leupold base and order the hammer extension from Handi.

Thanks for going to the trouble to take a pic of the bases.
