model 57 levermatic
« on: March 01, 2008, 03:31:16 AM »
I ask this question on the rimfire thread and got no reply,
I have a Marlin 57 'levermatic" shoots fine no problem other than very short throw that took some geting used to. I have only seen 3-4 of these since i bought mine in 1968. Were these an oddity,
or short runs or what mine has tube mag, they also camr im clip. Their was another model simular
in design but was in 30cal crbine i think. Any of you have or seen a model 57 what is the story.

I just bought one of these back in January and asked many of the same questions. Mine is a mod. 57M and is a 22 magnum with a tube magazine with a steel receiver.  I have not yet fired it due to bad weather here in NW Ohio since I bought it plus I don't have a scope mounted on it either.
Look in the lever action forum back in January , I found there is quite a bit of information on these rifles if you do a Google search, I believe they are somewhat uncommon but not really rare, when I first seen the one I bought I was surprised that I did not know of this model ?  After reflection on finding and buying it I am very glad I jumped on it and bought it because I have lost out on unique guns before by hesitating.                           Jed

I shot/hunted with a .22 mag tubbie, on Ft.Bragg in Spring 1966.  I liked it OK, but traded it even for a new 12ga Mossberg 500 Vent Rib Deluxe.  I was young, and wanted something different, on a married enlisted man's pay - with a baby on the way.

They were made from the mid-50's ['55 to the mid-60s (64-65)].

The M57 was .22lr, 22" bbl, mine was the M57-M .22 WRM, 24" bbl.

The clip magazine rimfires were the M56 & M56-M, same barrel lengths.

The similar M62 centerfire was available in either .256Win Mag or .30 Carbine, clip, 23" bbl, 1963-69.

My best friend growing up, an only child, had 2 or 3 great guns when we were about 15 or so, and that would have been about 1959 or 60. One was an Ithaca Model 37 Featherweight 20 gauge modified choke which I now have. He also had a Marlin Model 57 Levermatic I wish I had. As I remember it was a great shooting gun but we did not shoot it much, it may have been a .22 Mag and that may be why we did not shoot it a lot. The other .22 he had was a Marlin Model 39A (IIRC). It  a gold trigger as I recall and it shot GREAT!!!! If I had my choice between the 2 I would take the 39A, but the Model 57(M?) always intrigued me. I on the other hand had a JC Higgens 20 gauge bolt shotgun that I bought used from money I saved up, that was a nice gun also, because it was mine!!!....<><....:)

I had a Ithaca 37 featherweight w/rib 12ga. I bought in 1968 that someone relieved me of (like to get hold of his neck)
I have a 39A that my Dad traded a Colt police positive for in 1957, and i have the 57m tube mag in 22mag. bought it in 1968
I have not shot the 57 in years think it is time to get it out, killed a pickup load of turkeys with it
thanks for the info guys

The model 57 was my first rifle ever, I bought it from the Navy Exchange in 1964.  It was a good enough rifle, but didn't feed right every time.  I traded it off for an old Marlin pump action .22 a couple of years later.  Now I wish I had both back!

if you open the action enough to ck for a live round you might as well kick it out, it won't close,
that is with a 22mag. mine has always fed ok to best of my memory, like i said i have not fired it in years
I had a scope on it, loaned it to my dad for several years, he didn't like the scope so he took it
off and the ramp so i don't know if i can find a ramp to fit it.
