What is a good way to get started?
« on: March 01, 2008, 06:31:22 AM »
When I was a kid I had a mail order course from Northwest School of Taxidermy, I wish I still had it.  I've become a proficient hunter and would like to start tanning some of the hides and mount some of the birds.  But where do ya start?  Last year I shot a 75lb Coyote that I had mounted and a great looking very large 3x3 Blacktail that I wanted mounted but alas $500 was a little too much to ask :'(  I made it into a nice euro mount but...
So I figure since I garden, butcher my own meat, make sausagege and jerky, and spirits it's darn well time I learn something new from the past but where to start after I bag specimen.  I'm planing a Coyote hunt this spring after my shoulder heals.

look through some of the past articles in here and you should find some info, there is a thread about home tanning solutions, that may be a good read for you.  could also do an Internet search and im sure you will find some good info.

anybody have any other suggestions for him?

Try Vandykes Taxidermy. They have an online "how-to" page which includes tanning hides. They have a very simple tanning solution. If I'm not mistaken it is just a simple soak it in and dry after fleshing out. They also have the "pickle" type solutions. --                                                                                                           http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/newsletter/jan13-2005.htm

Also Dan Chase Taxidermy has videos on how to mount birds and just about any kind of animal.

Also their catalogues are free....
