Thanks, I think we are getting the hang of things under the ice, can't wait for some open water. When you modify Troys traps set one of his traps pan tension to the tension you use. On the way home I think I got him thinking that if a fly lands on the pan and it fires the trap it is set to light.

Ok, shawn you did get me thinkin! If a dog trapper the caliber of blakcoyote says that he runs 3# of pan tension i should follow suit! Heres the catch, duanes not settin for mutli-spiece catches, like taking grays or reds on his yote sets(not saying he doesn't catch'em)! But i catch a good number of fox on my yote sets! But thats another story. My pans are set to light i agree! So what i need is to find that middle ground ! I do side on the side of hellfire quick over riverdance stomp!! How about teflon washers on both sides of my post? 4 coiling? Mb's run a bent dog that lets the pan sit lower then the jaws then they are commited! I do like the idea of custom(oversize) pans along the line the mb's ! Duane, it was great meeting you!! wish we could have stuck around longer! Thanks for the copies of the articles that you've written!! GOOD STUFF!! I hope to be seeing a lot more of your stuff published in the future!! We still need to get together and talk some K-9 but theres lots of time for that!

Troy do you even know what tension you are currently running? Without checking I would guess close to zero. Before talking to Duane I said you should think about #1 to 1 3/4. Even at #1 3/4 most grays will fire the trap. This might even keep a few opossums out of the sets. What you said about being committed is not a height thing its a tension thing. If the trap doesn't fire till the animal places most of the weight that that foot normally exerts, thats committed. Now we'll have some things to talk about on our next check.

most people don't really know what the trap tension is set at. Its almost impossible to accurately tell because tension is only one variable. On most coyote sized traps, a pan that just stays up by itself, when set will have about 2 1/2 to 3 lbs of middle to free end tension.

I've tested many traps with a tension tester, and this is pretty close more often than not.

and thats about right for all canines, including fox. When you add dirt, you decrease the "tension"

at roughly 3# tension, I catch every fox that walks on the pan.....trappnman

Shawn, hello FEELINGS here!! LOL OK time for some schooling! We have some basic physics at work here. When engaging the dog to the pan you are putting pressure(tension) on the dog via the springs, since your dog laps over the hot jaw. This is known as static friction (stationary) not to be confused with kinetic friction(moving)! Are you still with me plumber boy? LOL You know i also run slabs of lambs wool under my pans, thus also increasing tension on the pan! So mathematically speaking I'm running 1.452746 lbs of tension! Don't ask me how i come up with that #! I just made it up!!LOL All i know is it can't be 0 there has to some static friction at work here! Class is over! I have to much time on my hands!!

one point.

if your traps are short latched, so that they are either "off or on"- then unless you would pack under the pan hard with wool or polyfil, it doesn't have any bearing on what tension that trap will fire.

perhaps a small fraction of an oz, but no more than that. The difference is non detectable with Sullivans tool. The nice thing about using the tool, is that you can check the tension once that trap is bedded- depth and weight of the covering, makes a big difference.

Ok Ok I totally forgot about the muskrat & weasel! I can't help it if they were so excited after reading my trap tags that they wanted to be caught by a top notch trapper such as myself! Trappenman I really like the idea of using a sullivans after the trap is bedded!! Thats a true test there! Be sure to close your mouth and shield the eyes!! LOL

The way I set my pan tension is this.After there clean I have a 4# piece of lead wrapped in duct tape.I tighten each pan up to where it supports the weight of the piece of lead and trips when I apply slight pressure with a pencil on the lead block,seen the pencil thing on a Charlie Dobbins video and it works pretty good. So at that point there about 4#. Then I dye and wax,which changes the tension,which is usually a little lighter than 4#.If it feels too light when tripping with my thumb I just tighten it slightly.And it works for me.The 4# pound tension before dying and waxing gets me in the ball park to where I want it.I use to use a 2# piece of lead but ended up with more toe catches or the trap firing when covering.And Steve is right,you'll still catch the fox,I do except for the occasional gray.I'm guessing my tension is around 3# after waxing and cleaning the wax off the dogs.Never tried tried the Sullivan tester.But what I've been doing works for me.

where the tester really is nice, is that you can test tensions on different parts of the pan. From dog side to free edge, I've seen it vary by 2lbs. for certain animals, placing the free edge towards line of travel helps.....trappnman

PS- as blakcoyote says- after the years go by, its all if it "feels right"

I'm thinkin that the tension should be set to the center of the pan! The 10 & 2 o'clock should still work for pan direction. It seems that they always come in at 45'angle so its still a crap shoot! Or they come in on the backside and pee on my set!! LOL Need to start flat settin them on the backside! I do something and they do the opposite thing over and over again!! Thats what keeps me goin after them!! There are some guys that put up big numbers yotes in my area! I really need to kidnap a few and water board them till they spill the secrets!! Blakcoyote will you come quietly or am i going to have to set a blind set ya? LOL

Is that in invitation? Because you do know that i would be all over it!! I 'm not sick of checking empty traps but it would be nice to see a few more bouncers every now and then! I have the basics down pat! i need fine tuning!! Set location also!! I catch WAY to many fox in what i think are yote sets!!

Troy if your catching fox in your yote sets , you arent doing too much wrong.... only thing i can think of is have any of your fox been torn up by yotes after catching them in yr yote sets? Also do you make more than one set at your primary set? If not that could be problem depending on yotes in your area.. if a location is good for one set it is good for two or three... also after catching fox do you remake set and then another set close by of location you just caught canine in?

I had a few fox harrassed by yotes!! None killed, Those grays are tough little buggers!! The reds i catch i'm targeting them (usually)! I do remake my sets after a fox catch mostly after reds because they really stink up the area good! I have to admit i should be settin more steel together! I'm always in such a hurry to get in & out as fast as i can! The longer i linger the more my catch ratio drops! I'm thinkin about predigging sets and holes,placing rocks, layin out hay bales and driving anchors well before season. Also, shawn wears hip waders while land trapping. I'm going to give that a try this year(it can't hurt)! It was my 1st TRUE K-9 trapping attempt! So a lot of my sets were exploratory sets to get the feel for areas! Now lookin back i made many many mistakes! I have a feeling i'll be skinning a few more of the big dogs next year!!
Duane count me in!! Its is october yet? I would gladly give up the summer to back on the K-9 line again! Consider this my RSVP !!! LOL
