scope issue on vanguard
« on: March 02, 2008, 02:02:15 AM »
i bought low rings for my vanguard and when i mounted it and adjusted for eye relief, the front bell on the scope is almost touching the barrel, right where the barrel starts to narrow. i can't slide a piece of paper between them but if i hold it up i see light between them. should i be concerned?

well i know that when you fire a rifle, the barrel does a "crack the whip" dance, and i don't want it to hit my scope and throw off my shot or break the scope.

Cut you a couple of shims out of a pop can or an adult beverage can and put them between the scope and the bottom cradles of the rings. Blacken the edges of your shims with a magic marker and tighten everything down. That should give you a little extra clearance and a little extra peace of mind.  :D

I bet you are OK.  Can't imagine the barrel moving much that close to the receiver.  I'd say you are perfect.  There's only one way to find out.

Beemanbeme, I use pieces cut from a mini blind. They are already curved and work great.

Nodlenor, sometimes I don't have mini blind slats available but I've ALWAYS got adult beverage cans available! :D

If there is gonna be a problem, it will come from the barrel swelling up when it gets hot from firing.
