460 S&W Magnum
« on: March 02, 2008, 06:36:08 AM »
This has probably been discussed before. The 45LC, 454 Casull, and 460 S&W Magnum all have the same diameter. What is your opinion on shooting these in the 45LC/410 Handi Barrel

IIRC there was some discussion about the .460 possibly creating to much pressure for the .45/.410 barrel. If not it sounds like a winner. I may be wrong but I think perhaps Tim posted something about the pressures. I am not sure if the concern was with shooting the .460 off the SB1 platform that the .45/.410 comes on from the factory or if it was the barrel itself....<><....:)

I wouldn't be concerned about the barrel so much, but the 410/45Colt Survivor comes on an SB1 frame, that could be a serious issue with catastrophic failure the result considering the Casull and 460 pressures are considerbly more than the 45 Colt, the Casull is twice that of Ruger level Colt loads and 460 is even higher. Properly fitted to a late model SB2 frame it shouldn't be an issue.

Well, I have that barrel on a SB-2 frame and have been meaning to try that but wanted to keep both eyes and all fingers.  Guess I will send the barrel in to get it drilled and tapped to mount scope.  Thought if nothing else it could be down loaded a bit.  Tim seems to know a thing or 3 about this things so will give it a "shot", (sorry bout that), and see what happens.  DP.

Let me check on the barrel steel used on the 410/45 barrel, depending on what it's made of it might not be wise to shoot full pressure 460 loads in it, although with the longish jump to the rifling, it may not be an issue.

Barrel steel is 1137, same as used in the H&R rimfire barrels, centerfire rifle barrels are 4140. 1137 is commonly used in shotgun, rimfire and muzzleloader barrels, so I'd be very leary of using it for a high pressure application such as the 460S&W. :-\

Does the 460 in the Handi use the gain twist rifling like the S&W guns?   If not I wonder what velocity loss is?

There is no 460 S&W Handi, just rechambered 45Colt carbines which are 1:16" same for the 410/45 barrel.
