257 Roberts Improved--Who Rechambers

I am looking to get an encore barrel in 257 Ackley Improved.  I would imagine I need a 257 Roberts barrel and would have to have it rechambered to an Ackley Improved.  If this is so who does it and how much would it cost?

I second the matchgrademachine.com advice. They turn out incredible barrels at good prices and in a reasonable time frame.

Also, you can't take a .257 Roberts and have it properly chambered to .257 AI in an Encore. In a bolt rifle, that's no problem as the barrel can be set back. But in the Encore, the headspace won't be true to .257 AI specs. Granted, a seasoned loader can deal with this, but it may cause a problem if/when you want to sell it.

There's one particular 'smith who's moved around the country a bit lately and keeps doing this. He'll take a 30-30 Contender barrel and run an AI reamer into it. Folks -- even other 'smiths -- have tried to tell him otherwise, but to each his own...

Any time I see a TC rechamber listed, I make certain I know what the original chamber was before even thinking about buying it.

Forgot to add: if you are intent on buying a barrel and having it rechambered, SSK Industries  is a good bet for this. But by the time you purchase a barrel, pay for shipping/rechambering, etc., you could have had a new custom barrel made to your exact specifications.

I have no clue how many times I have made the same case. I suspect i know which 'smith (?) you are referrring to. I thought I may have been the only one who actually read PO Ackleys books.

What amazes me is how few people actually have a clue about this. Usually, when someone lists a rechamber and I ask about the original chambering, I get a "what difference does it make?" type answer.

The 'smith I referred to in the earlier reply and I had a conversation about headspace a few years ago. He tried to tell me that since his chambers were on the minimum spec side and that they were well-aligned with the bore that headspace would be correct.  This was in reference to a 30-30 AI from a 30-30, by the way.

He, too, had no clue, and one of his "specialties" was Contender & Encore barrel re-chambers and "stubs."

A stub = a cheesy way out of having to weld a lug on a barrel or a attempt to avoid litigation that goes along with the responsibility of welding said lug on a barrel.

The stubbed barrels that I am familiar were nothing better than 1.25" groupers at best -- and that's in the hands of seasoned shooters/reloaders.

To me, that is not satisfactory, especially for the price tags on those particular barrels.
