.454 Casull-dilemma with H110
« on: July 09, 2003, 09:21:41 AM »
I know it's not a single-action, but that's where the .454 shooters are I'd imagine.  I'm trying to find some good loads for my 12" Encore .454 Casull with H110, and I can't get anything to group!  I'm shooting cast bullets from 250 gr. to 370 gr, and nothing is under 3" at 25 yds yet, and most groups are well over that.  It's not the gun because it loves Unique and almost any weight bullet, but I wouldn't mind having a little more punch that Unique provides, although a 300 gr. bullet at 1400 fps is probably enough for deer, it groups about an inch at 100 yds, one big hole at 25 yds, so I know it's not the gun.  If any of you have and tried and proven (safe) loads with H110 and the .454, please shoot me some info, if you don't want to post it, PM me or email me at encorefan@hotmail.com.
Thanks,
Selmer

PS Lloyd, they're your bullets, so if you have any suggestions, shoot them at me please. :)

If all of your bullets are from a single source, then I might think they are not sized properly for your barrel.  At this point, I'd recommend slugging your barrel to determine the size you need.  I'd also try some jacketed bullets as well.

I have seen some Ruger SBHs that would not shoot bullets sized smaller than 0.432", although they shot jacketed very well.

As with WW296, make sure your loads are at or above the listed minmum.  This powder does not work well at reduced charges.

Hope this helps.

32gns H-110/WW296 with a SRM primer and a very stiff crimp (yes, even in the Encore!) and as much case to bullet tension as your die set allows (bell the mouth but don't expand the case)

You can use an expanding die for a .44 mag to bell the case mouth without expanding the case walls.  This should give you ample case neck tension.

When having accuracy problems with 110, I just back up a little and go with 2400.  Might not get the very last foot per second but much better accuracy and quite a bit less muzzleblast.
