Lansky Sharpening System
« on: March 02, 2008, 04:06:00 PM »
What one to get? I have a BP gift card and figure what the heck. A Lansky Sharpening System looks just ok to me!

But do I get the 3 diamond stone kit.

Diamond kit includes coarse, medium, and fine diamond hones.

Or the Deluxe Kit with 5 wet stones?

Includes extra-coarse, coarse, medium, fine, and ultra-fine hones.

Depends on what type of steel you sharpen.  If you use carbon steel blades, then you can get by with the wet stones.  If you use some of the stainless steels by custom makers hardened at Rc 60 and above, then you'll want the diamond stones.  Actually, the diamond stones will work with any steel; you just have to be careful to be "gentle" when using them on softer steel, or you'll remove a lot of unnecessary material....quickly.

I think you will be happy with either one. I have the one with three wet stones and don't need any more. It works better than anything else I've used.

I have had the Lansky 5 stone sharpening kit for years now. I don't know that you really need the additional 2 stones. But I have had to use them before, just not that often. For me it's not about getting a quick edge on my knife. I really enjoy just sitting down and taking my time when I sharpen my knives. I have tried the diamond version but just never had much luck with it. I think I just like the feel of the stones running across the blades.  :)

Have both type of stones but now only use the diamond because I get faster results.

I just got back from Bass Pro with the Diamond Kit with the coarse, medium, and fine diamond hones. I know! It's been a while! ::)

I got the Lansky working. I've had a problem with a #1 D.H. Russell Canadian Belt Knife I built from a kit I could never get an edge on. I now have a very sharp, 25 degree, hair shaving, working edge. Now on to my better knives! 8)

Although my Lansky diamond set works wonders on most all my knives, (those with a very thick "backbone" don't work) I have found that I lack the patience for a more than adequate edge at times. I "touch up" with another tool (same degree pitch) and when patience is not a concern, the Lansky has no competition in my opinion. Others that like plain stones might disagree, but, that is one talent that I lack.

I'm happy! I wonder how I did without a Lansky for so long. For the most part I do very well on an edge. But being able to reproduce the same edge time after time is priceless for me. Now every knife I own from hunting knives, fishing knives, and even the kitchen knives all have the correct angle of edge. Makes it easy to just touch up with my EZ Lap for that clean sharp usable working edge!
