Optimal .243 barrel length
« on: March 03, 2008, 03:48:31 PM »
I've got a PH .243 barrel for my encore.  I really don't like the 28" length, just seems unbalanced to me on the encore.  Thinking about cutting it down...

Question is, how can i determine the optimal performing length for the .243.  I can cut it to 26" like the 'standard' factory heavy barrels, but if there is an 'optimal' length for the .243 that is shorter (24") I would like to explore it...

Second issue is how to make the fluting look good where the barrel is cut off and re-crowned.  I'm thinking tapering it down from the top to the bottom of the fluting.

Not sure about optimum, but I have a 15" .243 Encore that is quickly becoming my favorite gun.
I have thought seriously about a 20" Bull barrel.

21 inches is what I would go with if I was having an MGM barrel made. In fact, I am considering a 308 winnie MGM barrel.   Similar case as the .243.

I just sent my factory encore 26" heavy stainless .243 to SSK for shortening to 18".  It should be a fun little carbine.  I'll post range results when it returns. I can't wait.

I have the 28 inch 243 and a 22 inch bolt  I get 400 fps faster with the 28 over the 22 inch. I will give up a little handiness for the extra velocity .
100 gr rem around 3200 is nice.

Got my barrel back from SSK.  Shortened to 18" and recrowned.  I had it back in about 10 days.  I am impressed with the service and speed.  Fired a few at the range and I think I'm in love (again).  Factory ammo produced 1.5" group at 100yds.  Not too bad for a full face mask and big gloves on.  This should make a great treestand/ tree saddle gun for whitetails.

Optimal barrel length depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for maximum velocity, leave it alone. if you are looking for handiness, then cut if off to 20", but be prepared for more muzzle blast. I would thing that 22 - 24" would be a good compromise between handiness and velocity in a 243. If you are getting into the flutes and that look bothers you, you may opt for a add on muzzle break, that has no holes in it, a sort of false muzzle. Many gunsmiths make their own muzzle brakes to add on, just have them make one with out the holes added. They make them blend into the barrel pretty well now so they do not look like a chunk of steel hanging on the end.

I have a Virgin Valley 22" sportier taper and last deer was over 300 yards.
If it were me in your position I would first try to sell the PH barrel and buy a factory sporter 24" or see if someone will trade you for a shorter barrel.  Another possibility is contact Ed's contenders and do a trade,he buys ,sells and trades  http://www.edstc.com/24ssenc.html
