Hornady XTP's
« on: March 04, 2008, 06:27:46 AM »
I am expecting a Huntsmen barrel anytime and want to know who is shooting XTP's. What weight, sabot, and powder charge also.  Is there a major difference between the mags and non mags? I am also interested in other favorite sabot loads(SST/Shockwave, Deadcenters,Barnes,etc..).

Thanks

I've shot 240gr XTP's in my 24" Huntsman, over 85gr of FFFG.  Also shooting 250gr SST's over the same charge.  Both shoot well, so I haven't tried any other combo's.
NEF Huntsman .50
Sako Finnlight .308
Rem 700 .338WM
Rem 7600 .308
Rem 11/87 SP Slug

I have been shooting .44 cal 180 grain XTP's over 70 grains of 777 with a TC breakaway sabot out of both my Sidekick and my CVA for the past several years. Extremely accurate and very high expansion. Last doe was shot at about 70 yards and I recovered the bullet halfway through the hide on the opposite side. Measured diameter at it's widest point was .72 inches most of it hovered around .64 inches. I am considering going to either a 200 or a 240 grain because of the damage that the 180 is doing. I need to slow it down a little and don't really want to drop my powder charge any more than it is.

Hi , my current smoke pole is a firestorm , I used to use the hornady 240 gr xtp loads in my 50 cal.
Long story short , try them in cold weather before you rely on them.
I found out my sabots were breaking up in slightly cold weather , causing the bullets to fly extremely wild even at 25yds.
It was not a bad batch of bullets , I tried many different lots, etc, etc, etc , and I looked into this enough and  have dealt with this so long you can set your watch by it.
On the other hand they do work nice in warm weather.
Hornady was of no help on the problem and said they never heard of this , hornady also told me the magnum 240gr xtps are different from the ones sold to load in your 44mag , hornady told me they have a thicker jacket for the increased speeds of the muzzleloaders , this is what they said to me about 2 1/2 yrs ago

The loads I have tried and work well accuracy wise are;

240gr .44cal XTP in Harvester green 50/44 cal sabot 85grs FFg 777 powder.
250gr .45cal XTP in Harvester black 50/45 cal sabot 85 grs FFg 777 powder.
250gr .45cal SST in Harvester black 50/45 cal sabot 85grs FFg 777 powder.

The SST did great on a large doe this past season.  I have had such good results with the XTP that I have not needed to use the XTP MAG.

My favorite load in my sidekick was 85 gr of pyro p under a 240 gr TC Cheapshot.  Complete passthrough with excellent performance on all deer I shot with it out to 80 yards.
