World's smoothest Civil War mortar shell
« on: March 04, 2008, 10:39:22 AM »
As I may have mentioned, we decided to turn down an original 10 in. mortar shell to make one that would be just the right size to shoot out of our old Spanish mortar.  So here it is, a 9.486 inch shell turned down from about 9.9 inches.  The shell had already been drilled to take the powder out, long ago, so it wasn't a pristine specimen or I'd have second thoughts.

If you have any UGLY original 10 inch mortar shells you'd consider parting with reasonably, I'd like to do a few more like this in case I lose my one and only shell.  Maybe I ought to put a radio  transponder in the thing so I can always find it.  I think as a minimum I'll put a short bright colored rope on it to make it easier to find and retrieve.

Cannonmn,

Once you have several of these you should go high tech. add a GPS locater's that way you could let everyone see where each lands in real time. through the wonders of the Internet!

...or how 'bout an orbiting RC model airplane with a little TV camera in it, a mini-spotter plane!  Or maybe we'll just send up a helium balloon with a minicam on it.

stink bomb inside the shell.

Good idea but since we're limited to 1/4 oz. of chemicals, I don't think it would be stinky enough.  Maybe if we took a dog along...

I worked in sporting goods store. Kids used to get into the buck lure. A little bit of that stuff goes a long way.
I've had trouble with electronic stuff and recoil, but a simple buzzer survived. (Cyalume sticks extinguished on lift off). We were able to use AAA batteries, MagLite (the little grain-o-wheat halogen ones) bulb and a piezeo buzzer to retrieve stuff shot out over the back field at night.
I'll bet true recoil-hardened telemetry gets pricey. Night and lights is COOL. The spin makes the thing flash as the light and dark side come in and out of view. The buzzer helped us find the ones that landed lens down. Enjoy, MIKE
