300 yds. +, 22-250 Accuracy
« on: July 09, 2003, 01:27:33 PM »
I am looking for all the information I can gather on pure accuracy loads for this caliber.  It is a Remington 700 ADL 22-250, floated barrel 1.25 lbs. trigger and a 6-24X40 BSA Contender scope, from sand bag rest @        200 yds it will print out .55" 5 shot group with no to mild wind.  Is this all I can expect or will this $400 set-up do better. I have tried Varget, H-380, and best results with IMR 3031,with Nosler 50 BT.  I have also used 50 -55 grain all types of bullets and even CCI -BR2 primers.  I do neck sizing, primer pockets cleaned flash hole reamed, trimmed, deburred and sort by weight.  Is neck turning worth the time??? I am greatful for all of y'alls input.

Are you asking a question or just bragging! Just kiddin, 200yd 1/2" groups is fantastic. You wont find too many custom jobs that will do any better. That rifle is a keeper, and if you don't aggree send me a note and I'll gladly take it off your hands.  KN

  from y'alls responce I take it this is a very accurate piece.  But the ? is, with this set-up could three seperate eggs at 300 yds be hit for the pot(pot being all entry fees).  Then one egg, one $3 shot, and 500 yds of wind and who knows, for $1000. I am very pleased with this rifle and pending the 300 yd, and the 500 yd yearly shoot in will be for sale, price   will hender on proformance. But what ever the outcome I am happy since this is my first center-fire and only 1 yr of bench rest style shooting and reloading, but I have learned alot from the trusty RIMFIRE 22 Model 60 I have that prints .75" 10 shoters at 100 yds.

Blue or shall I say old worn gray M700 action, new SS Rem. flutted takeoff barrel 26in. (trued to action). Trigger is set at 1.25 pounds. Three shots @ 300 yds. one clover leaf all bullets touching. :-D  :-D  :-D

53gr Hornady match BTHP (bought @ guns show $30.00/1000)
Frontier case (cases trimmed to msx. length)
Fed 210 primers
35.5gr AA2520

Shoots in my rifle and one of my shooting partners rifle with the same accuracy. :-D

You might try IMR 4064, but if you're getting a 1/4MOA group at 200 yards, I don't see the problem.

Now I'm no benchrest shooter but if those groups are consistant and not just your best group out of several then it sounds like the only thing that would keep you from hitting 3 eggs @ 300 yds. would be your ability to hold steady and most importantly read wind.

the .55'' group is an average of 8 groups with the smallest being 0.48 and the largest being 0.63, shot over 4 days.

Sounds like a good load a good rifle and some good shooting.  :agree:
If there is somewhere you could practice at the full 300 yds. then if it were me think I would practice there and also I would try to practice when the wind was blowing to get the feel for the wind drift of the bullet and load you are using. Then just go out and calmly win the shoot. Sounds simple when I put it like that huh?    Good luck.

yeah BruceP, i practice 2-4 days a week 20-25 round a session.  My "plan" is to show up with rifle wraped in a old sweat shirt, stained of course, and my home-made rest and sand bags, only 2 sighter shots and maybe show up some of them $1200 "target models".  This is only a "plan"
