22 LR recambered to 22 Mag
« on: July 09, 2003, 01:51:30 PM »
Has any one had any experiance with a 22 LR barrel rechambered to 22 magnum? I know there is .0001 difference in bore dia. But I also know that it is done regularly on some barrels.
I have an older Super 14 22 LR barrel, that  I was considering selling, but thought I may get it rechambered, shortened to around 11" and recrowned, since I was looking for a 22 magnum barrel anyway. I was just wondering if anyone else had done this, and if the Contender barrels shot descent doing this?
 Any comments or observations.
 Thanks, Andy

Andy,

If you're going to go through the bother to have the barrel rechambered, I'd just punch it out to 22 KHornet. There are .223 diameter bullets available for reloading that ought to be just the ticket for the tight bore and the by adjusting your loads you could cover the span from 22 Magnum to a 40 gr. bullet near 2600 fps.

Go for the rechamber!!!  I have a 22 LR that was rechambered to 22 mag and the diameter difference is not at all a concern.  Face it, Ruger and several others offer revolvers with 2 cylinders, one for 22LR and one for 22 mag right? I'm also with you on the shorter barrel, mine is a 10, 11 sounds real nice.
I think you'll get a good product if you send it to a good gunsmith for the work.

I have a 10" 22 Hornet barrel, that I have been considdering having a K Hornet rechambering done on. I just might before long, I just had the barrel reblued and recrowned.
Actually I really like the 22 magnum, it's a neat little round, but then so is just about anything that goes bang. I have a couple of 22 magnum rifles, and decided I wanted a Contender barrel. However I might end up with a 10" 22LR to rechamber instead of cutting the 14". Also I have a buddy who is right sharp on guns, his work is allways first rate.
Oh and thanks for the feedback, Andy

I think I would recommend you trade for a regular "Mag" barrel. My reasoning is based on the fact that Smith, Ruger, etc., all go with the .224 bore for their convertible revolvers, and .2225-.223 bores for the LR only. The theory is that overall accuracy is better having the LR "slug up" in the .224 bore, than swageing down the larger bullets in the smaller bore. They feel that the reduced bullet deformation in the mag bore is more than offset by having to bump up the LR bullets. Another thing to consider, is most mag bullets have a true jacket, and not just a copper wash, like the LR bullets. This will certainly bump pressures; not dangerously, but noticeably. A trade would also be the cheaper route, you could probably come out even. Just something to consider,>>>>>>>Bug.

Can you do a 222mag A.I. from a .223?
....make it count
