Okay here we go again 30.06?
« on: July 09, 2003, 03:48:34 PM »
After trying the Nosler BT I have now started loading the Rem Core-Loc over H380.  That's not the problem, though.  The loadbooks all call for a 165gr jacketed bullet to be loaded at 3.30" minimum overall length.  When I full size the brass and trim it to specs, load a dummy round and let the chamber/lands of the pistol I am shooting seat the bullet, I get an overall length of 3.298".  That is, of course. .002" less than the books call for.  I am trying to seat the bullet .03" less than the chamber of the pistol to start.  The question is:  Why is my chamber of my Encore 15" 30.06 barrel so short????  All of my other caliber barrels (Contender & Encore) are on the deep side of standard chambers.  I know bullets have different ogives and seat differently, but it is just seems kind of odd (with my limited knowlege of reloading) to be right at the cartridge length minimum with any bullet design.  Someone who has knowlege of the Encore 15" 30.06 FACTORY barrels please help.

Don't bi*ch. Most of the guys complain because the throats are too long! :)  My  708 was quite short but after lapping it and shooting about 300 rounds through it it's gotten a bit longer and smoother. Just take your max OAL subtract how far you want off the lands and try some different lengths to see what shoots the best. Mine seems to like .030-.040 off the lands. What is in the book is standard SAMI specs so that the shells will fit in ALL rifle magazines. You have no magazine to worry about so load em to where they shoot the best.

That's the thing about handloading... You "taylor" your loads to fit your particulay gun... Like Duffy said, subtract, and perhaps try different seating depths... But, in YOUR gun, with THIS bullet, you now know the maximun lenght. Seating just a bit deeper is only going to require working a bit with the load... I.E. finding the OAL you want and then work the load up with it...
I want to finish well
I want to end this race

I have a 7M-08 in Encore 24".  If I use Speer 130 gn bullets they measure at 3.75. If I use Nosler ballistic tips 140 gns. they measure 3.88.  The OAL is supposed to be 3.80.  I will be shooting it for the 1st time tomorrow so we will see what happens.  :D

Thanks for the input.  I feel better about it now.  I will watch for signs of pressure and work out a load that is good for this particular barrel.  Thanks again for the comments and advice!

Just to show you the difference in bullets, here's a list I made to hang in my reloading room. It helps to quickly remember the lengths and I just subtract how far off the lands I want. Now this is the MAX OAL (touching the lands) using a Sinclair comparitor. Your milage may vary.

Speer 130g - 3.295
Sierra 140g Pro hunter- 3.312
Nosler 140g BT- 3.355
Nosler 150g Par- 3.315
Nosler 160g Par- 3.325
Sierra 160g SPBT- 3.305

These are all for my 15" 7-08 Encore and as you can see there is quite a bit of difference between bullet brands. I have even seen a few thousands between bullets in the same box but that's nit-picking. My bbl seems to have about a .010-.015 variance that it will shoot well. It just shoots REAL well when it's right on.
