Re: Its here -- 224 GNR Handi up date - mini range report
« Reply #5 on: March 05, 2008, 10:57:10 AM »
Just had to take the new girl for a test dance , just to get the scope close and see how she shot . I only took 15 rounds with me as its only about 30 deg with a 20 MPH cross wind .

Load was 15 grains of IMR 4227 under a Speer flat base soft point with CCI 400 Small Rifle Primers . All in all i'm very pleased with how it shoots , this was a starting load per Gary Reeders data ( all his data was from a 8" revolver ) so i expect to get quite a bit more speed from this 22" rifle .

The recoil and report were more than my 218 Bee but much less than my 223 Rem , will try to post some pics and other info here in a little bit , still need to download some stuff afrer i had to re-format the comp .

One thing that did happen was i had 2 FTF , both showed good pin strikes so i'm off to pull those and see whats going on there .

Thanks again guys ,will try to get out for a good range report this weekend depending on the weather , ( calling for a major show storm ) .

Once i get this one shooting i can start doing some work for the next one , a 45/70 BC re-chambered to 577-450 Martini-Henry , and yes that one will keep its standard BC wear , no bright colors .

Stimpy was this just a re chamber or did the bore need redone also? I also agree it is a very natural looking round. Thanks Dale

Is that a white line spacer on that butt pad? Kind of dating yourself aren't you?  ::) ;D ;D I like it ;) You need to add one between the fore end and spacer :P ;D ;D

I found Remington 7 1/2 primers work well with BL C2

Dale

It was just a re-chamber , started life as a 22" 22 Hornet , got around $ 400 in the whole thing between buying the barrel , getting the chamber done , a set of Hornady custom dies and all the shipping everywere .

Kurt ordered the barrel for me while he had a frame at H&R , so it went from H&R to Kurts to me to Reeder and back to me . This whole process started back in late Aug of last year , about 7 months ago . While the idea has been bouncing around in my head for a lot longer .  ;D

LaOtto222

Ya it does add something to the look , thought about the forarm but the fit and lockup are just too good to tinker with right now .  :o

I remember reading your post back in Aug about this project.  Did the barrel material or the twist rate influence you to go with the .22 Hornet instead of the .22 Mag?  Or maybe both?  What was the turn around time with Gary Reeder?

Sort of all of them , went with the hornet for the better steel as this round will be a higher pressure than the 218 also got an extra 2" in length . As for turn around time , that was very quick , it was just under 4 weeks from the time it left my house till it was back in my hot little hands . price was on par with what Wayne York charged for my 218 Bee rechamber .

Both do very fine work , Gary has a better price for doing his GNR chambers than what he charges for just any chamber , more of a pride thing i think , I'm looking at having him also do a 30 GNR from my 30/30 barrel , it will equal the 300 Savage as far as speed & bullet weight goes .

I do like the idea of a one of a kind Handi .  ;) at least till someone else desides that they want one too .

Going from the rimmed 22 Hornet to the rimmed 224 , all they had to do was run the reamer in , it cut the new rim recess while doing the chamber , i don't have a Hornet case to show the diffrence .

Thats another reason that i like rimmed rounds in the Handi , don't have to do a lot of ejector / extractor swapping , just cut and go .  ;D

d_hiker

Another reason for the Hornet barrel was the 1 in 12 twist , what way i could shoot the 50 , 52 , 53 and 55 grain bullets not just the 35 , 40 and 45s .

It looks good.  I found his website a couple of years ago and was going to send him my Ruger Blackhawk and have him do the 9mm cylinder into his 358 GNR.  But I haven't been able to find the cylinder.  I know it has to be around someplace.
